My in laws have biooked a house for half term at Upton and its very close to the river ! could i get under the bridges ? (iam 5-6 meters high) or if not where could I stay for the week close by?

Thanks

Tom

Upton is close to the River Bure and there is a dyke there but unfortunatley your air draft is too high to get there. Basicaly the Bure bridges at Gt Yarmouth have a max of around 12 feet (ish) at low water.

You could, however, get up the River Yare via Gt. Yarmouth or Lowestoft. Nearest mooring spots would be Cantley (not much there) or Brundall, which is probably the better bet as there are marinas, chandlery, pub, shop etc. It is worth noting that booking will be neccesary and Brundall Bay (a Tingdene marina) is probably the nicest and has facilities (electricss, water, toilets, showers). Brundall is probaly around 15 mins by car from Upton.

PM me if you need any further information or advice on getting into the Broads via Lowestoft or Yarmouth.

You're welcome Tom.

If you do come the Yarmouth route involves three bridges. Two at Yarmouth (Haven and Breydon), which you will need to book in advance for openings and one (Reedham) which will swing on demand (trains permitting and contact via vhf ch12). Worth checking that Reedham is working before you come as ther have been problems with maintenance.

If you come via Lowestoft you can fuel/stay at the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club, which is a good jumping off point for the return leg as it is just inside the harbour with anytime access to sea. The bascule bridge has regular timed openings to go inland to Mutford Lock to get into the Broads at Oulton Broad. You need to book the lock and a swing of the railway bridge the seaward side of it (note that this bridge currently has scaffolding on it and only opens three quarters of the way - with your air draft you will need to be careful).
After that there is a swing bridge at Somerleyton (vhf 12) and then the one at Reedham.

I have all the contact numbers etc should you need them.
