upside-down compass

I've seen one made by Ritchie Compass.

A modern equivalent would me to have a multi readout from your boat's instrument system. This is what I'm planning on doing.

I must admit, I took to sleeping in the saloon rather than the forepeak toward the end of last year and now miss being able to see the windex when I wake up. I already missed the bulkhead compass as mine is only visible from the cockpit.

The RAF used them in WW11, very nicely built. And they used to turn up on private aircraft like Austers. Finding one now might be a bit tricky, and pricey.

Perhaps an edge reading one lower down?

Due to available space fitted bracket mounted overhead Suunto C-95 compass which I can read 5' away

Hope it might help give you ideas

Most compasses have a needle point bearing at the bottom to locate the card which partially floats in the fluid. So you will perhaps have to be satisfied with an edge view compass. Have a look in car accessory shops for one designed to be hung from the windscreen. good luck olewill

Such compasses were very common in fishing boats where they were mounted on top of the wheelhouse to be as far away as possible from any ironwork.

You may be able to pick up an old one somewhere, though a more economical answer may be to fit a fuxgate compass and you can put the display where ever you want it.

I wrote to Ritchie and was addressed to a nice item but I do not like its price either!

"Telltale compass". This, I was taught, is the technical name of what I am looking for. I will be patient and shop on e-bay till something affordable appears. In the meanwhile I will go for a small and cheap bulkhead unit.
Thanks to all
