Hi,

currently keep boat in cardiff bay. considering a move with work to the weston area. I was just wondering what sort of moorings are available on the river axe? we have a 32 foot long keeler. I have yet to see how she settles in soft mud! are there moorings available for a craft of this size? from what I can see on the internet some moorings are trots others pontoon all drying to soft mud? what about facilities for getting the boat ashore and hard standing for the winter? is the mud soft enough for long keeler to sink in or do they end up over on their ear?

any information / advice greatly appreciated

Weston Bay Yacht Club administer the river moorings.Uphill Boat center has pontoons at uphill which is a creek off the river. All dry out to mud, there are plenty of single keel boats there.

I would contact the Yacht Club first for a chat. http://www.wbyc.co.uk/

Why not Portishead marina? More like the facilities you will be used to in Cardiff.

cost. I used to keep a boat there in the early days when the price was discounted due to building works but these days it would be a lot more than cardiff bay. Also I always found the first/last bit of a journey a real pain - short tacking through the 'washing machine' in a nasty chop was never pleasant!

That's the same with me. Portishead is about four times the price of what I pay now.

Really? When I checked about four years ago, I think I recall Cardiff was about three-quarters of the cost of Portishead. As I live in Portishead, travel cost to Cardiff (plus the inconvenience) would have obliterated the difference. Portishead annual contract is about £265 per metre including VAT.

I pay £640 a year for my pontoon mooring in Cardiff. My boat is 10m.
It looks like Portishead have increased their prices since I looked.
The £10/night I paid for my recent visit was good value.

Comparing marina prices to club prices is hardly fair though. Cardiff marina is £240 per metre and penarth marina is more.

of course its fair! I cant afford marina prices at portishead. I can afford yacht club prices. simple enough comparison for me.

Fair to whom? People were comparing mooring costs. My costs are much higher than some places and lower than others.
Paying the profits of Marina companies is fine if you can afford it. Contessaman and I can't afford that luxury.

There is no typo or secret,. I have my boat, Chausey, a Westerly 33, on a club pontoon. £640 is enough to cover all the costs,. Obviously it is possible to pay much more at places locally that have to include profit their price. £640 includes fees to Cardiff bay, which is something that is not payable in Portishead.

PS, Included in the price I pay there is a £50 token to encourage me to use the bar!

You can also reduce that price by £100 by working 10 hours for the club.

Is it possible to replenish the bar token? :-)
I see on the club's web site a pontoon fee of £2300, what is that for?
We have moored as a visitor many times at CYC and often considered moving our boat there from Bristol, she is a 28ft mobo but we do have a bit of a reliance on 240volts if the boat is to be left, ie battery charging, heaters etc are there any plans to install electricity on the pontoons.
Might be able to source a good deal if there were.

Every member on the pontoon pays £2300 when they first put their boat on the pontoon. If you take your boat permanently off the pontoon the club returns this fee.
As far as I know there are no plans to put power on the pontoons. I certainly have no need for it.
Maybe next time you are over we will meet.

No more tokens, we've gone all posh now and we have a swipe card, good move as I lost more tokens than I spent with the old system.

Hi sorry for the late post. To answer some if your questions. The river Axe moorings are more than suitable for your boat. There are a few boats of similar size to yours on the river weather smaller or bigger in size. I my self have a 30' keel boat with 5" draft on a mooring and it sits fairly upright when the tides out. If you have a look at my picture gallery in my profile I think there is on of my boat on the mooring with the tide out. To have a mooring on the river you need to be a club member. The cost of membership and mooring from April next year will be £90 for a full club membership plus £70 for the mooring. There are pontoons up by the boat yard but these belong to the yard and would be somewhere along the lines of £100 per month and have a lot less tide a access than the river moorings have. There are currently quite a few moorings free on the river. As to weather your boat would sit upright or over on her side depends on what part of the river you choose to moor. The yard does offer lift out and storage facilities. Or the club has a drying out facility if you prefer. If you haven't already feel free to pop into or contact the club. We are open every Friday night. Karl.

That might be the case with Cardiff Yacht club where the "marina" is really a basic club pontoon mooring with dodgy pontoons at that, but it isnt the case at CBYC where the club marina has all the facilities of Penarth or Cardiff but is much cheaper.

Apart from no electric and a long walk to some of the pontoons. I gave up on cbyc after waiting 7 weeks for my application to be processed and hearing nothing from the membership team.
