I have a Bav 30 with D1-20. The first fuel filter just uses a Fleetguard FF167 filter, i.e. there doesn't seem to be a trap for water. Is this a problem, should I consider replacing it with a filter that does have a trap, and if so is it very difficult to do?

I've googled images of the filter you mention and it appears to be a branded replacement filter element, for which there are 167 substitutes in the cross reference guide. I was not able to find any images of a complete assembly incorporating this refill, but it appears to be open at both ends, suggesting that there is a trap or something similar incorporated at the bottom. What does the bottom part of your filter look like when it's in place? How does the refill attach to the top section; screw-on, or bolted?
The refill for the primary filter on my D1-20 is a different brand to the one in the link, which I can't remember right now, but it looks like this but with a hex-headed nipple on the bottom instead of the plastic tap:

Must be a useful safeguard to have a first / primary fuel filter with a water bowel in the base. Most constructions are filter on top and bowl below with sealing ring between and bolt or some such holding the two together. The base can be a glass construction for easy inspection or metal, so water (if prsent) only visible when making the annual filter change.

Throughput capacity will be in your engine manual or a marine engineer will advise, should you want to replace yours.

Have to add I have never in x years found water in my primary, slight evidence of fine particles yes, but if water evident then time to look seriously at the tank and fuel source.

Good luck

Your Bavaria is most probably fitted with a CAV-type primary filter, located in the engine compartment. Because of its location, it has a metal bowl under the filter element. This will collect any water. Here's a pic of the primary filter in my Bavaria...

The “CAV” type filter (Delphi) is a system and can be assembled in many different options you need a manufacturers assembly leaflet to work out what can be achieved from the basic parts available and then look at someone like ASAP supplies for alternative spin on cartridges
Watch out the basic head can be most likely metric but there is a lot of SAE THREADED still about

That is just a standard CAV/Delphi 296 primary filter alternative. Are you sure you have not got a metal or plastic bowl underneath - might be a shallow one? Otherwise what is attached to the bottom of the filter?

My current boat has this cav type primary filter. My previous boat had a racor style. The racor, apart from been easier to replace the filter (just remove the cover and replace) is it consider a better primary filter or both do the same job?
