upgrading smartphone

The reference to £10 package is to what Giffgaff call a goodybag which lasts for a month. You can choose a £5/10/15/20ish goodybag which you can set to recur in the following month but which you can also vary easily via the website. The 'goodybag' is a deal giving a good value package depending on what combination of voice/texts/data you find you actually use.You can also top up in the traditional way so that if the 'goodybag' allowance is exceeded you have a credit to draw on,although you would normally avoid this as the charges are then more normal than discounted but still competitive. So, much like the monthly bundles offered by others.

What's this about £10 payg package? I thought payg was payg. Does the Moto G take normal or mini SIMs ?
I'mcurrently on O2.

hi

ps- presume these are unlocked - i don't have much phone knowledge - be gentle

SWMBO & I both have Moto Gs. Unless you need a top camera and street cred, I can't see why anyone would want to pay more. She got the 3g one for £10 a month from Tesco's, I was so impressed with it compared to my old Galaxy S that I was gointg to get one too, but the 4G version came out with a microSD slot, so I got that for £13. If your data needs are fairly modest - you don't download movies when you're away from wifi - that's all you'll pay.

It was getting the phone for the same price as my Giffgaff deal for service only that swung it for SWMBO.

I understand the Moto G is treated so as to be water resistant, though it isn't advertised as such. Whatever, both phones have survived a few damp times on board.

A very useful addition is a hard case, similar to an Otterbox, but change from a fiver on eBay. It may not be a coincidence that I have one and my phone has survived a number of escape bids onto concrete and similarly unforgiving surfaces. Mine has a stand, which adds to the usefulness.

1. Don't know, but think that's more to to do with the provider than the phone. Never tried, but I'm pretty sure my MotoG can
2. Most do. I use my my MotoG as my car satnav.

3. A quick search came up with this from http://www.gapyear-newzealand.co.uk/mobile-phone-new-zealand.html:
Can I use my mobile phone in NZ?
Roaming with your British mobile phone can be an expensive option for a long period of time. We would recommend buying a 2Degrees pay as you go sim card and putting that in your existing phone. Calls are as little as 15p a minute back to the UK! You can buy a sim card here.

Before you leave the UK, check that your handset is unlocked by your provider so it will accept sims from other countries. Then, when you arrive in New Zealand you can also visit a Vodafone Shop and buy a pay as you go sim pack

That sounds like a yes to me!

I have a Samsung galaxy ace which has served well apart from internal memory on which many apps have to be stored. My navionics app uses quite a bit of the meagre 180mb and i often get low memory warnings and have to delete stuff - a pain. I've heard the Moto G is well thought of in the budget category. Has anyone any experience of them?

Got a smartphone ( galaxy 4) a tablet ( galaxy 10) and a lappy on board. If they all fell overboard tomorrow I would replace the phone with something simpler for just making calls. I'd probaly replace the tablet with a 7 inch nexus. And I wouldnt replace the lappy at all.

Apart from taking there isnt anything on a smartphone that isnt better done on a tablet IMO. The ideal tablet size for a boat is bout 7 inches

Of the phones I have had, the Samsung ones have been the best.

I've had a 1st generation Moto G for about a year, and it's excellent. Feels well-built and sturdy. Good battery life, crisp screen, works as wifi hotspot. The camera is more than adequate. Bought mine SIM-free from Tesco and use a giffgaff SIM in it. I had to unlock the phone to use the giffgaff SIM (£2 unlock code from eBay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/lineoutcommunications/ ).

I also had a Samsung galaxy ace with the memory size problem, even with unlocking, rooting and moving apps to a memory card.
I bought a Moto E, sim free from Argos (I had £17 of nectar points to use). I've been very pleased with it, I didn't need dual sim and had to cut my mini sim down to micro (no tool, just took measurements off google image). I also put in a 32gig memory card to store music, pics, docs etc.
More than happy with the purchase.

I have just bought two Doogee DG 310's. Classy Chinese bit of kit for less than half the price of the Motorola G second gen. Check out the Youtube reviews. Interestingly one reviewer noted the plastic back was identical to the Galaxy's!

It's cheap because it's got a poor screen - less than half the definition of the Moto G.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and an I Pad with no sim card in. I use a tethering system from my phone to enable the I Pad to pick Up the Internet which works well. I also have a Bluetooth boombox speaker (re chargeable battery) and from my phone radio or a jazz app I can have really good music and no wires anywhere on or off the boat.

Forget it now! I've now got the Moto G second gen which is brilliant so far. Good screen, good sound (who needs a boombox?, and stylish looks. I'm waiting for the new mini SIM card to arrive from O2 so I can make calls but it certainly tick all boxes on wifi and runs Navionics app just fine.

Good luck with your phone but I personally would not want to use Navionics on a small screen. 7 in tablet such as nexus 7 (1st gen) an be had for under £100 or a Hudl gets good reviews. No internet connection required. Go works fine without any sim or hotpot. In combination with admiralty charts it gives a lot of peace of mind to know where I am.

Hudl is next acquisition probably. I can run Nav on both. Having it on phone is good for passage planning in the pub or back up on passage. Can't see reason not to use on phone.

Having used Navionics on my phone this summer, I'd say it's better then nothing when entering an unfamiliar port, but it's too small unless it's right under your nose. At my age I need reading glasses to see the darn thing, which doesn't help when I'm looking for a distant buoy!

As a professional tightwad, I haven't order a Hudl from Santa, I'll be waiting for the January sales to see if there's any reduction, but I think that's my way forward.

Yes I wouldn't use it as sole means of navigation and would have a 15" Raymarine plotter if I was rich enough (I'd have to upgrade my boat first). But navionics on a tiny screen probably saved our lives on one occasion.
