Has anyone upgraded a Raymarine autopilot computer (specifically S1) to a 'G' with an internal 'gyro' yaw rate sensor?

It is supposed to be a factory upgrade, but I think it is a failrly simple task. Has anyone done it? (the Raymarine Gyroplus II external unit is expensive and has all sorts of stuff I dont need in it)

Thanks

Yes I have done that upgrade - I purchased the sensor off ebay - a lot cheaper than the Raymarine upgrade - we have noticed the differece in performance as the boat reacts better in heavy conditions and the AP now has the self learning functions

We have a raymarine tillerpilot with a gyro plugged into it ( black blob approx 2" square screwed to a bulk head) and its fab. Quite happy surfing our 25ft boat in a F7. This sounds similar to your potential setup and it works well for us. Unfortunatly I cant tell you exactly which system we have as its ex test gear.

Thanks, that is what I am considering - internal upgrade or 'black blob'. Internal (off Ebay) if easy to get the cover off and mount, otherwise black blob approach. And improving stability when surfing downwind was one of the reasons.

dnickj, is it just simply unscrew the cover and plug in the small pc board upgrade? (I know to beware of static) Nothing special to note?

I'd have an aside question: I have a type300 course computer, if I fit the yaw sensor, does the course computer have to be used in response level 3 ? or is the gyro signal used whatever the response level ?

thanks

With the yaw you have 9 response levels, and the radar works better too.

Fitting the internal yaw sensor is quite easy but its not just taking off the cover - you have to disconnect everything and take out the motherboard and insert the new chip underneath. Use an earthing strap on your hand to make sure you don't blow anything. Don't go for the external one, ours failed and we got it replaced with the internal.

Thanks, thats is the bit I assumed but wanted confirmed, before I went ahead
