updating navionics hd tablet version

Is this dodgy? I ask because I paid for another charting program ( gps nautical) and after updating they stop the program working and say I need to pay the sub again because the charts are a year old.

If I update navionics will I eventually have to pay again? HD version as mentioned in the title

I update HD on my iPad regularly (now running 7.2.3 on Europe HD) and have had no problems with 'blackmail'.

When Navionics app is updated, is it the data or just the software that changes?

Two different things. I seem to get 'base map' downloads on a regular basis (almost every time I open the app) but software updates less frequently.
