updating a Garmin GPS 451

Hi, first post. I have found on the Garmin site, information for updating Legacy GPSMAP series of Plotters. This update can be downloaded and used to update a range of these old plotters. It uses a CD card to store and upload this update. My problem is, the CD card with the update doesn't seem to be recognized by the plotter. I have backed up the plotter's existing data to anothe CD card successfuly. Does anyone have any experience in this matter ? I am wondering if the downloaded file from their site needs to have a special . xxx extension. Any help would be appreciated.

IIRC the update file needs to be in the root folder on the card, not in any subfolder. Did you mean SD card?

Have you followed the instructions on the website exactly? Garmin: Legacy GPSMAP with SD Card Updates & Downloads
Make sure the SD card is not too big or small and that it is formatted etc. It could be the the SD card reader/slot on your 451 is being a bit temperamental. I'd try it all again, downloading from scratch using a different SD card.

I think you have to format the card in the plotter first.

Hi to all that replied. Finally got it sorted and updated the GPS map legacy unit. However, what was not clear from the Garmin instructions was that the downloaded file needed to be run on a PC or (MAC) which then produced the necessary files which were then written to the memory card for the update. When this was inserted in the plotter it immediately recognized the card files and updated the plotter.
By the way the card was formatted by the PC not the plotter.
