Update on yesterday\'s smoky diesel post . . .

Well folks, thanks for all your words of wisdom. Some of your diagnoses I thought were a bit wide of the mark, however . . .

We drove down to the marina this afternoon armed with enough spanners and tools to open a shop. First we disconnected the gear linkage from the offending (port) engine and turned it on . . . and slowly increased the revs . . . little bit of blue smoke . . . more revs . . . listened for a bang . . . more revs . . . no smoke . . . full throttle with 3200 rpm. Clear as a whistle! 'What now skip' said my cabin boy, 'To sea' I declared and off we cast. Out into Pegwell Bay we went and gave her WOT - sweet as a nut she was.

Conclusion. Some rope snagged the port prop or shaft yesterday and when we returned and berthed up putting her into reverse 'unwound' the snag. Anyone got any better ideas?

Didn't get involved in yesterday's post but...............engine that suddenly emits black smoke, is labouring, won't rev up but no other symptoms is an engine under excessive load - like those artics struggling up a hill in front of you on the roads. In your case almost certainly a fouled prop and probably and luckily cleared in reverse when picking up your mooring.

Don't forget to express your gratitude to the King next time you go out by lobbing a coin over the side!
