Vic S you are right Today I received the news from HM revenue & Customs that my proposed use of IDA has not been approved. I will re-apply saying it is for model steam engine. So much for the truth! Thanks all

Its all been on here before!

Trouble will be that you might only be authorized to buy a very small quantity and if the computer turns up the fact that you have just had an application turned down they are going to smell a rat. Make sure you can show the Customs officer your steam engine if he turns up at the door and remember they don't need a warrant like a policeman.

So So much easier to buy CDA!

Is the smell in the Dye?
In SA certain locals used to sieve it with a loaf of bread as a filter to improve the drinkability /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

cheers Joe

......and in fact quite cheap if you buy in 5l + quantities from (eg) AGP Woodcare. I can even afford to use a splash in the window-cleaning water.....taken me years to discover that! (no idea if I'm still allowed to /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif ).

No the colour is just methyl violet. Most of the characteristic smell is due to pyridine, and that is something you don't want to smell in high concentrations. although there are worse.

The link to the HMR&C site has all the info.

Its the methanol or wood spirit in it that makes it toxic. The other stuff is to make it look bad and smell bad mostly.

The cheapest I have found is £1.49 for 500ml or £15 for 5l. This is pretty expensive considering how much you can get through with frequent use of an Origo stove. Has anyone found cheaper than that?

1) I'm surprised if you're getting through any significant quantity of meths running an Origo. I've had two of these stoves (one really old model, one brand new) and as far as I can remember the meths lasted ages and fuel costs were fairly negligible (and I'm an avid tea drinker!).

Make sure you put the covers on the fuel tank(s) (rubber on the new model, metal on the old) when the boat is not in use to stop any evaporation (though i sometimes forgot and it didn't seem to make much difference on the new model). If the covers aren't on between trips you may also get a bit more 'background' smell. If you've lost the covers the rubber ones (which sit on the tank and under the burner) can be replaced with a circle cut from an old inner tube. The metal ones I had on the old stove were (or looked uncannily like) lids of small tins of paint, an just sat on top of the burner.

2) These stoves are a great bit of kit, but you do need plenty of ventilation (eg washboards out) when the burner is on, especially if you use meths. You can get nicer smelling fuel abroad. Somewhere I've got a bit of paper with all the different names in different languages, but in France you can buy 'alcool a brulee', which is sold for lighting barbecues (and running fondue sets???). I managed to get a friend to find (easily) and bring me a couple of bottles back, or if you're over there yourself....

I once brought back loads of French alcool a brulee and found the smell to be so repulsive I couldn't use it for the fondue or pierre a griller. Eventually I tipped it down the sink and the whole house reeked of it for a couple of days afterwards!

I quite like the smell of meths....reminds me of Mamod steam engines and so on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
