I went up to Mistley several times over the weekend - the fence's still there
Thanks for that info. I lived close by when that all kicked off but haven't been up that way for a while. There was an active campaign to remove the fence at first but it would seem to have been unsuccessful. If anyone has more info on it I would be interested.

I was curious so went looking and the hearing into the application to have the wharf declared a "village green" is coming up very soon. If successful the fence will go, if not probably not it seems

The 24th June 2013 has been announced as the first of a four day Inquiry to register Mistley Quay as a Village Green by Essex County Council. This date was agreed upon after TWL Logistics, the main objector to the Application, opposed an earlier date of 19 February claiming that this would not give them sufficient time to prepare their objection.
The Inquiry will be held at Mistley Village Hall, Furze Hills, Shrubland Road, Mistley and will be open to the public. The announcement of the date is welcomed by Ian Tucker, a resident of Mistley, who applied to register the Quay as a Village Green back in August 2010 and if the Application is successful it will result in the removal of the fence.
In order to declare an area a Village Green it has to be shown that a “significant number of local people have indulged in lawful sport and pastimes ‘as of right’ (ie. Without permission, force or secrecy) on the land for at least 20 years”. Free the Quay, Mistley Parish Council and the residents of Mistley are supporting Mr Tucker in his application and a large number of local residents have come forward to give evidence of use of the Quay throughout their lives in Mistley.
Free the Quay is confident of the outcome of the Inquiry and a substantial fighting fund already exists; but further fundraising events will be announced in the next few weeks.
I have no experience of applying for village green status but can see a lot of close parallels with the process for applying for rights of way based on usage and custom and I wouldn't be so confident personally. I hope they are successful but I suspect the inquiry may decide that it's an inappropriate use of the legislation. Let's hope not

You get them from HLB by sending him a PM asking if any are available.
He will ask you for a CHEQUE and a stamped addressed envelope. Last time I bought one was around 15 quid, and very good quality they are.
