Some years ago I sailed on a Freedom 35, she had 2 unstayed masts with wishbone (windsurfer) rigs, I'm sure she had a lifting keel as well. Wheel steering but just the one rudder. I think it might have been an American design but couldn't be sure.

recently returned from a double atlantic crossing with an unstayed mast on a 40 footer so think i'm qualified to hold forth.

firstly, most people's idea that it places tremendous stresses on the hull is completely untrue. because you don't have mast and stay forces opposing each other there is no force trying to drive the mast out through the bottom of the boat. the sideways force exerted at deck level as my cat starts to lift a hull is just 5 tons, very little in comarison to the strength of GRP.

there are two main rig designs: the simpler type is seen in dinghies like the finn and laser and in cruising form as the freedom rig. this style was also used by team philips and ocean planet in the last around alone.

the second type has a boom which projects forward of the mast and carries the tack of the jib. the aerorig was the best known of these types but is now sadly defunct. mine was made by Freewing and resembles the aerorig but has a freely-rotating aerofoil mast. see their website here

in my experience the greatest benefit is the ability to let the sail out over the bows and reef without having to round up into a gale.

i would hate to go offshore with a conventional rig having experienced the benefits of unstayed sailing.

You could also look into Junk rigs as they almost always use unstayed masts, are very cheap and extremely safe to use, they also develope a smaller heeling moment which makes them more suitable for a lifting keel.
You can PM me if you want to know more.
Maurice.
