Unsafe forestay?

I am preparing my recently purchased Jaguar 24 for our first launch. I've been cleaning her up etc

Today i noticed that the eye bolt that the forestay attaches to turns easily. I imagine that under the deck is a nut, but it is in a void space that is completely inaccessible without cutting into the deck or hull. The eye bolt must have been installed before the deck and hull were joined together.

I have tried to turn it in the tighten direction, but it never tightens, just turns. It is slightly moveable side to side, but otherwise feels secure enough.

Can i trust this fixing for my forestay?

Cut that access hole or you will forever have that nagging worry, the fact that you asked the question means that you have decided that you ought to make sure!

If its loose water will get in.. will that be an issue?

If its stainless steel and water penetrates between fitting and deck it will result in crevice corrosion. When the eyebolt fails the mast will fall down.

I'll second what VicS says, I found one of my shroud U-bolts corroded through inside the deck and bent waiting to snap. I replaced it and removed and checked every other through deck rigging fitment.

Could you post a picture?

Here is a photo of the fitting.

it is between the anchor locker and the stem.

Knocking on the deck, sounds like there is wood / thickness under it.

Knocking on the vertical forward panel of the locker (where the anchor bitter end is attached) also sounds like there is wood behind.

I think the sides of the anchor locker are just GRP - I think I could cut a big hole there and put my hand round to under the forestay fitting.

Would this weaken the locker construction? Any other dangers to this?

On my Jaguar 21 a previous owner has installed a circular hatch right where your anchor is attached to allow access to the area under the forestay mount. He put a piece of thick ply under the eye bolt. Cutting the side panels will make it difficult to see what you are doing. I don't know whether my boat originally had a fixing to tie the anchor to. There isn't one now.

Hi Bill
Iv'e looked at your photo which is quite different to my Jaguar 24 KIONI sail number 19 built1990

Where your anchor is attached mine has a round access point just big enough to get your hand into. You can buy these pre made round access covers at most chandlers. you will just have to move your anchor eye, but at least you will be able to get your hand in to hold the bolt and tighten it up.
The other thing iv'e noticed is that the cleat is mounted across the bow instead of in line (not seen that done before)
