The Association of Thames Yacht Clubs (ATYC) have issued the following email to members:
"We are advised that over the Easter Holiday period Thursday 9 April to Monday 13 April a number of locks were not manned. Had the weather been better it would have probably caused more concern, but ATYC believe that the locks should be manned every weekend during the season from Easter to the end of October, and certainly the same for the bank holidays.

To enable us to ascertain exactly what happened from 9 to 13 April it would be appreciated if you could e-mail Michael Shefras on michael@shefras.demon.co.uk. If you faced locks unmanned other than between 1300 – 1400.

Please only give your actual experiences if possible the day and time. PLEASE DO NOT ADVISE HERESAY ONLY – WE REQUIRE YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES.”

For my part I had no problems between Marsh and Mapledurham. Except for lunchtime at Mapledurham on Sunday, walked up to the lock to find the top gates open and a narrow boat inside HAVING their lunch!!

They soon moved on when we closed the gates and opened the bottom sluices and gates.

According to the Visit Thames web site:
January - March 9:15-16:00*
April 9:00 - 17:30
May 9:00 - 18:30
June - August 9:00 - 19:00
September 9:00 - 18:00**
October 9:00 - 17:00
November - December 9:15 - 16:00

* When Easter falls in March: 9:00 - 17:30. Good Friday to Easter Monday inclusive.
** 9:00 - 18:30 Saturday and Sunday

So 17:30 appears to be correct.

The only unmanned locks we came across were at lunch time, so no problem there.

I did think it a little strange though, that a one lock which appeared to have two keepers working it, they both went to lunch together, wouldn't it have been better to stagger the lunches a little?

Darren.
