I bought a 27ft yacht today, with a drop keel, bilge plates approxiamatly 1970's or earlier. GRP hull, beautiful canoe type stern, wooden coach roof, heads on starboard side, just inside hatchway, galley also on starboard side, v berth, does anyone have an idea as to what it might be? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif bought it for its beautiful shape alone.

There can't be a lot of GRP double ended designs around. I don't think there's an LM of that length but I think the Francis might be a possibility. I've not been able to find a picture but I'm pretty sure she was double ended and a development of an earlier design. It may still be too recent to be like your tho'. Post a Picture? It might help.

I wondered if she was a Frances 26, as well. Does she look anything like this?

Yes she looks very like the Francis 26. The Victoria 26 was an iteration of the design and had a longer coachroof and a smaller cockpit. I've only seen all-grp versions of both but if it's a Francis and it's been done by the yard, the quality of the fitting out should be very high. Both the Francis and the Victoria attract huge prices for an old 26footer...I've seen a a 1980's Victoria with an asking price of 29000.

You're quite right and, looking at some out-of the-water pictures, the hull doesn't particularly lend itself to adaptation into a lifting keel.

Can't cut and paste, or post the pix, because they're on a pdf, but have a look here

Erm. Good point.
However he may not be used to a forum where people respond within a forthnight. I post on the Foxcub forum and they'll all be adult Reynards by the time some posters revisit.

Well the first one was built in 1974, but as it's a long keel boat, unless someone took the original lofting plans and modified it for a lifting keel it probably isn't a Francis. It wouldn't be impossible, I suppose.

Got me all excited for a moment as it's one of the few 26' boats to outsail mine to windward (other than out and out racers).

I still think he's not reading the posts tho'

Francis 26 was never made with a drop keel. There was the Francis 26, first flush decked then with a coach roof, then the Victoria 26 with a modified interior and longer coachroof, which was then modified into the Victoria 800 with a new deck mould and several changes. Sadly they were around £55K when new, a price for afficionados, and Victoria went bust soon after. It was costing them more to make the boats than they could sell them for...I never paid anything like that for mine. Prices seemed to have settled down. I am intrigued to see them being discussed on the Classic Boat forum!

Read all about, read all about it..In this months PBO /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

cheers Joe

Francis 26

Perhaps we ought to run this as a new link as it seems to have been hijacked by this fine wee boat. I've always liked the Francis/Victoria yachts as sailing boats, but my crew thinks them even more cramped than my Nic. I'd never dream of spending that much on a boat anyway, but if the pools come up, I might look for an 800, or maybe even a Vic 30. I'm not sure I could live with the cockpit tho'.

[/ QUOTE ] Timeless design, fast, seaworthy and beautiful. I reckon that's classic!

However, please guys, it's Frances not Francis. People make the same spelling mistake with my daughter - it's her name - and it drives me mad! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Francis 26

The cockpit on the 800 is very different to the Frances 26. As to spending that much money on a boat.. well I would never spend it on a car or a wide screen television. We all make our own choices. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Francis 26

I was thinking anout the "new" price of the Vics........not criticism of your choice. My hobbies are paid for out of reserves and I've never had that kind of spare cash to spend on anything and, hell, I wouldn't dream of paying even £20000 on a wide screen TV or a car myself.
