hi-i am trying to track down a tool i have seen before but do not know the name of-it consists of a lot of plastic sliders on a rail, which are free to move up and down, perpendicular to the rail itself. the rail can be pushed against curved surfaces, so that these sliders move and create a perfect image of the curve, which can then be marked out on and cut from a new piece of wood, so that the new wood fits snugly against the original curved surface. hey presto!! saves huge amounts of time measuring exactly curved surfaces.

i have googled and searched woodworking tools but cant find it anywhere. anyone know what this thing is called, or where i can get one? many thanks.

Profile gauge - available in B&Q (and from many other tool shops / suppliers as well) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Big Ol' Cliff is quite right. Most big DIY and specialist tool stores will have profile gauges - some of them specialised.

You could usefully discuss your requirement with Axminster Power Tools - who now offer an advice service to us; see YBW.COM home page, lower left - and also have a look in their online catalogue.

G'luck!

Yep, agree with young 'Baggins, APT have a good range of gauges and scribes, also Rutlands are worth a look. Both sell some very good quality tools.

many thanks all-sorry for stupidity-my local b and q employ only people who looked at me like i was mad when i tried to describe it-what a difference a name makes!! will contact APT and see what they have.

You can also use penny washers . Just stick your pencil in the middle and roll around your shape . Only good for scribing bigger items though .
