not long ago i discover a sailing dingly in very very bad shape.i started fixing it but now i have some problems with rigging etc. so i need to find the name of the dinghy to see at least some photos of it. please if anyone can help i would be more than gratefull,i spend days searching in the internet bus nothing...here are some info: loa around five metres, the color inside is red,it is very old as it was alredy used in the 80's,it has a storage room at the front,it's main sail has a big red G (i figured that is the symbol of the class but i couldn't find anything), the sail says "made in germany" and also these dinghies were used in a german hotel in greece so most probably they are german built and someone working in this hotel told me that they had iron centerboard(i'm not sure for that it is missing). thans and i hope someone out threre can help me....:)

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Some pictures would help.
Also your location as some of these things are regional.
What is the boat made of ?
I assume the 'G' is not just an old German sail number. It is of course possible that the hull does not 'belong with' the sail.
Apart from the Graduate, which is only 12ft, nothing springs to mind.
If nobody on here can help, the CVDRA and Yachts and Yachting websites have some knowledgeable people.
There are some books in my club which might help, I'll have a look sometime.

I see in your thread on the wanted forum you are asking how to post a picture.

Quick and "easy" way is to upload it directly as an attachment from your computer. See the FAQs for instructions. however the picture must be one of the uacceptable file formats and below a certain maximum size.

A better way is to upload your pictures to a Photohosting site such as Photobucket and paste a link to them there.

TinyPic is another similar site esp if you will not be using at often and want a no frills option to Photobucket.

It is doubtful it refers to Germany as the letter would then be a 'D' for Deutsch? :)

If the sail marking looks like the image below, then it refers to a yacht called a Gloucester. This does not mean that the yacht is a Gloucester but that the sail might be from a Gloucester and have been made to fit the yacht in question:

Gloucester Sail Marking

Further data on the Gloucester yacht can be found here:

I hope this helps? ;)

im from greece and the story of these boats is:there is hotel for german people near my place and they had these boats for a lot of years for the guests of the hotel.this year they closed the hotel and started selling everything very cheap. i asume that the sail belongs to the hull because the mast fits exactly to the hull and the sail to the mast.the G on the sail is kind of caligraphic so again i asumed it is the class of the dinghy.the hull is plastic. i asumed the dinghy is german built because back then germany had cheap boat equipment so i figured,"german people run the hotel so would be easier for them to bring the boats from germany"(would be easier the boats to be greek but they are not so...)

As someone has pointed out, I think the old sail letter for Germany was 'D' anyway.

Is there a sail number? You would not expect a national letter without a number.
It may be a well known class on the continent, there is a bit of a divide between UK classes and the rest of Europe, we have many classes unheard of in the eurozone, I'm sure the reverse is true.
On the other hand, many builders have designed their own classes over the years and there has never really been a 'class association' for them. Eventually the builder finds the class unprofitable and it disappears. This has happened to a few good designs over the years.
The Y&Y dinghy forum has a few international members, there is always 'Sailing Anarchy', which is based in the US but has some european members.
I've had a rummage through a couple of books without success so far I'm afraid.
Good Luck with your boat.

If a school/ hotel boat it could be a letter instead of number? Boat A, B, C, D etc
Allot of sail boat logos on sails where styleised or symbols.

What is the overall length of the dinghy in Imperial or metric; the shape is reminiscent of the 420 that is 4.20mtrs; or the 470 4.70mtrs, which the French manufacturers used to do, and might be a clue, also a photo of the sail emblem.
