This evening as we exited the lock cut going upstream about 30 yards just to the right, we struck something very solid under the water. No idea what it was, as water not clear enough to see.
Just be aware if traveling that way.

So have you reported the obstruction? Local lock keeper or the EA incident room?

This report says "30 yards just to right", TMBA Incident Report says "About 20 yards upstream after exiting the lock cut" It really does help to have a precise location.
It would be very useful if you could actually mark a spot on a google earth satellite view such as this:

Sorry Boatone, next time I hit something I will make sure that I take a note of precise gps coordinates straightaway, so there is no discrepancy of about 10 yards!!

Report it via ICS 0800 80 70 60 , the lock keeper will note it in the incident book but nothing else. He won't report it as he doesn't know the full details and cannot.

If you report it as above , a NIRS will be raised ( national incident reporting scheme ) and a number assigned. This will then be directed to the relevant team leader for that reach who will investigate. Make sure to give all your contact details if you want a reply.

Assuming you have a marine gps operating one way to mark an underwater obstruction would be to press the MOB button as this allows recall of a position later on . Don't know if all units have it but my ancient Sitex and Koden ones do ..

I would advise not, especially if you have a DSC radio.

Thanks - have removed my comment - I only have standalone gps units which will not communicate but with an integrated system its probably dodgy as you say.

We hit it too yesterday. Looked like a very very large log and only on view when it is hit and bouncing in the water. Stopped an EA launch to tell them about it as they were heading downstream in that area. Would be good to know if they managed to find it. Difficult though as it sits under the water.
