Underwater light ??

Prompted by a thread on the Mobo forum, to which Searush has made a valuable contribution I am wondering whether to take advantage of an existing hole in the bottom of my boat to fit an under water light.

I have recently removed the old Ball Head toilet so now have a 2¼" diameter hole in the bottom. The plan was to fill and glass/epoxy over it.

Would it look cool to use this hole to fit a flush mounting underwater light ?

Would it be better to "repair" the hole with unpigmented resin to create a translucent window and mount a light on the inside ,,, adopt Searush's suggestion perhaps.
 
You could have red White red (vertically some how?)

So when your capsized-mid ocean everyone will know your restricted in the ability to Manoeuvre :D
 
VicS. following an earlier posting couple of weeks ago I purchased a 3metre length of 20 LEDs 'lozenges', 3 LEDs to each 'lozenge' ; they cost 99p for the lot but £5.19 postage from Hongkong or Singapore. I've tried them as a single 3LED lozenge and the light is brilliant, you can cut off whatever length or number you require and just connect to a 12v system, battery or charger. They are also pretty good down to 6v input ;the lozenge is encapsulated and therefore waterproof, so I reckon that 2 or three would provide the ideal solution for an underwater ,or through hull lighting panel. I bought them not for any specific purpose other than to make an anchor light for the rare away stopover - 4 0f these would be plenty!

Thanks for the offer. I think I will repair the hole properly.

We ought to have a name for these underwater lights

How about "wanchor lights"

I tell you what, a capsized catamaran in last year's RTIR could have done with one - took me a while to realise why it wasn't drifting with the tide - it's mast was impaled on Ryde Sands!

In general I would side with your opinion of underwater lights and their buyers. However I must say that when we berthed next to a big chartered mobo with them in Navplion a couple of years ago we were fascinated by the underwater life revealed by them. Great entertainment watching the large shoals of fish circulating.
 
I'm glad I am not alone in my love of these wondrous technological maritime improvements. I cannot understand how Columbus & Magellan coped without them.

My contributions to the Mobo forum are not always treated as the light hearted banter they are posted as. It seems that my jokey snide comments hit their mark a lot harder & truer than intended sometimes, so the responses can get quite bitter. So it goes, I still wave at MoBos - if only to ask them to slow down or go away when I am working topsides or SWMBO is on hot drinks duty.
 
I'm sorry, but many of our colleagues on MoBo believe these to be a beautiful addition to their pride & joy & pay many beer tokens for them. We even have a forumite who makes his fortune manufacturing them & I have in the past been reprimanded for belittling the concept as it could mean he will miss a payment on his Ferrari.

I also get the impression that some MoBo owners don't like the dark at unlit anchorages.

Perhaps they are afraid that strange sea creatures will sneak up on them
