underwater light corrosion

Well M,lud...............

"So you're saying" ..... was saying that unnecessary light has now been recognised (a little late in the day) as a real problem along with noise and air pollution and that many people are not even aware of the concerns.
Anywho....

There am I,Mr A hypen B parked in Cabera with my Bayliner 66 ( the big twin 125hp version and the 14 cabins) , just settling down for an some late evening stargazing with a cup of cocoa before turning in at 9.00pm.I say good night to the 6 well wrapped up ladies of a certain age who have all got their nighties on and thick layer of that goo that they put on their faces and then settle down to half and hour of peaceful reflection.

There is one bouy free and its next to me.Mr B arrives and moors up.His is well aware that he should not empty his holding tank for obvious reasons and that starting his jenny might annoy others,he has been on the receiving end of both.Probably will not have the fly stereo on to loud either knowing just how far the sound will carry.
However there is this switch on the dashboard placarded "Instanto Daylito" and the 20 semi naked lovelys clustered around want to have a swim........wheres the problem and then he remembers some killjoy wittering on about light pollution and how it can affect others.
H,mm decisions. :)

Simples! Get and underwater IR camera with which to perv over the girls.... ooopps... I mean watch over them for their own safety! I am sure now that FLIR has bought Raymarine, one will be offered as an offical accessory soon.

:D

Personally I think underwater lights are really cool. If I could be bothered fitting them on our boat I would. Hmmm - after seeing the pictures I think I will!

As the people who make stamps and toilet paper know, you can make something a lot weaker by making a row of holes in it ....

Fortunately though Tim there are folks who actually understand engineering and who know enough not to be bound by simpleton rules like that. They tend to do smarter and more lucrative things than design toilet roll or sheets of stamps and they put in more graft than toilet paper designers. Eg they design aeroplanes, which you'll notice have rows of round holes in a line along each side called windows. You feel free to take your engineering advice from toilet paper engineers if you wish though :-).

ROTFL, I saw that coming.
Actually, I was expecting a reply along the lines that by tightly fitting alu/bronze micro-led lights in each toilet paper hole, nobody would be able to strap it along that line anymore!

How about a marinised Chest wig & Medallion to go with the lights then?

As you wish Searush but I'm not sure it's appropriate to make such personal stereotyping jibes on here. It's a bit like watching a Westerly bilge keeler trying to point and saying "I bet the owner of that has a long beard and a rusty old bike to go with his boat" :)

Point? POINT? POINT? Doesn't that require sailing into the wind? Doncha know a Gentleman will never do that! :D

Anyway, I had a trim this year, ask Kwaka, he got a helluva shock when he bumped in to say "Hello".

Advice please..

(put in Feb this year) is not working, I was worried in case a problem with it.

When it came out the outside of the light was eaten and hardly anything left of the ali cover and the light had perished. I had a spare to put in and I will do that today before it goes back in, my question is, to avoid this happening again can I link the back of the light casing to the earth of the boat to stop this.

Thanks

Phill

Sorry Phill ... I've been away for a week but looks like the knowledgeable here have already covered earthing. The only other thing I would recommend for most lights is that they are anti-fouled ( although you may already have done that) ....

As JFM has suggested Alu-Bronze is the 'Best' (we use CA104 ) but our 'No-Holes' small boat Drivelite range have Alu heads ( withh SS316 bodies) which are then hard anodised and then PTFE-coated.

If you want any specific advice re your own models then drop me a pm and we will see if we 'know' anything that we can help further with.

BTW -- if anyone else is interested, we have found a hard anodising specialist who have developed their own process. The result is in a different class to anything else we have found.
