Underwater inspection camera - should I buy one??

Mine came with a CD which needed to be inserted into the drive for the camera to work, so I had to use a laptop. It won't work on my Nexus 7 because there is no CD drive unless, you could copy the programme over from your computer.

Whilst they come with a CD, i didnt bother to install from the CD, but just used existing preloaded software which worked the web-cam. Assume no issue loading the CD software, i just preferred not to clutter up with duplicate software (also saved connecting the remote CD drive)

Two things to watch are the focal length and depth of focus. I have one for use at home (looking in cavity walls etc). It has short focal length ~100mm and limited depth of focus, say +/- 50mm and would be far too finicky for most uses on a boat. Andrew

This is a comment from Amazon, "Q: Can it be used used on Android devices trough an OTG USB Cable?
A:
hi Very sorry for that, it's can't be used on Android devices trough an OTG USB Cable."

Wish I'd known that before I bought mine...........
I bought the Endo which works fine on my PC (as a trial) so bought an Android on recommendation by friend that the scope works with Android.
I now have an Android which I don't use and an Endo which I can't use. Bah!
I am trying to get SWMBO to let me use her laptop, but she is reluctant (ha, understatement!) to let me download spurious driver programmes.

I bought the kit to view inside the mast as I think I have entwined halyards. 7metres sounded fine for the probable problem area down from the top, but there is a stupid "relay" half way down the cable which means it is NOT 7 metres useable. BAH !!

I have now bought one of these ...

Was it that exact model (ASIN B00A6K4DCK) ... [Later: no] Updated link: http://amzn.to/1h2wdRT

I have found a large variation in the picture quality two similar devices I bought, but neither of them come close to this HD 720p one which gives about four times the resolution: http://amzn.to/1h2yzjC

I just typed in endoscope and the item I linked to looked identical to the item I bought but I have now corrected my original post.

Having just had an engineer find the source of an oil leak from my gear box with a stand alone expensive Bosch inspection camera, I am more convinced that ever of the usefullness of a camera. The Bosch had no record function so one connected to a laptop would be much better.

HD sounds like the one to have

Thanks for the input

Following on from reading this thread I have one of these winging it's way towards me.

Thanks very much to you all - great idea.

You shouldnt need to install any software if the laptop already has a webcam - the software preloaded for that should work with the endoscope, just need a bit of fiddling of settings. I have used on old XP netbook and more modern Win 7 in this way

Windows 7 doesn't come with any means of displaying the output, so you need to load that. Drivers install automatically.

Perhaps, but most laptops already have webcams with pre-installed software - eg Cyberlink YouCam on this Samsung. The video I posted (see thread above) was done using this and worked perfectly. Was a different product on the older XP machine, but also worked fine.
Of course software is also provided with most cameras - I just prefer not to clog up with multiple programmes doing same job

Sounds encouraging. I shall wait til SWMBO is out at the shop before I try this:encouragement:

Can you link to an android device you you think? We don't have a laptop on board and that looks great.

Android devices don't have built-in support for external webcams; you can get apps for that (e.g. 'USB Webcam'), but each only supports a limited number of webcams on a limited number of Android devices, and e.g. the author of USB Webcam has commented that it doesn't yet support any of these endoscope webcams.

A solution more likely to work (but more expensive) is an endoscope camera which connects to its app over WiFi, e.g. this one: http://www.amazon.com/Endoscope-Inspection-Smartphone-Flashlight-Waterproof/dp/B00HI9056A .
