My idea of the week is to hook up an underwater infrared camera to my onboard multimedia system so I can see rocks and things ... anybody tried this?

I did see one somewhere that was attached to a pole of some sort and came with a kit that included it's own screen. Can't remember the name, but I'm sure it was in one the mags a few months ago.

Hate to point out that rocks continually submersed in sea water will be same temperature as sea water, so infrared won't work. Forward looking sonar is what you want. Have one sitting in garage never used? Want to buy it?

Spose if you have a fetish for rocks and things, you could do what the Spanish do.
Cut a big square hole in the hull of your boat and bond in a big square piece of glass.

Then you could spend all your time gazing at rocks and stuff and better still cheaper than infrared!

I had a look around at underwater video equipment for work a while ago and discovered that cheap(ish) digital video recorders from dixons etc work amazingly well in low light conditions. I think that you can buy off the shelf waterproof housings for these and coupled with the correct cable should link to your multimedia system without too much trouble.

one problem could be lighting but i spotted a LED divers torch in a shop the other day and thought that i would be ideal for strapping to the side of one of these housings.

of course water turbidity is the biggest problem, ok in the med/tropics but in the uk you'll be lucky to get more than a few feet of visability.

hope that helps

Just pop the camera on your coachroof Jimi. That way it'll capture more underwater activity than if you put it beneath the designers water line.

Nor have I so Were are you coming from with that remark? But then if you thought that infrared would detail these hidden beast's then you would be wrong! Unless of course they had just dropped off the ship that was carrying them!

he meant...

infra dig. He's bought an infra dig camera. It spots things that aren't where they should be and makes sarcastic remarks about them. For example in the sentence 'wos I at Cambridge wiv you?' Jimi would be immediately able to spot the deliberate mistake and say something cutting about it.
