Having had to renew the cutlass bearing on Tulana I now have to put it all back together.

any recommendations for a underwater flexible sealer for the outrigger to prop tube and outrigger to boat joints?

Been advised a Polysulphide sealant is what I need...

what it looked like before rudder/prop/rope cutter and outrigger removed...

I found polysulphide to be fussy about what it will stick to, specifically I tried Boatlife Lifecaulk on Huntsman windows and it does not stick to plastic (at all, a splendid failure, see book!).

Best thing I have found is Arbomast BR. Non setting.

You might choose to use some polyurethane, such as one of the Sika range, but disassembly next time might be difficult.

Thanks Ben,

I have also heard that polysulphide is fussy and very smelly to use... hence hoping someone would have a good suggestion!

When I took it to bits the sealant used was still flexible, impressive after 18 years, also I don't want a sealant which is also an adhesive.. just think its not going to be what was used first off, and indeed make disassembly very difficult in the future. Arbomast BR sounds like the sort of stuff, cant see anywhere that its OK to use for underwater fittings..

just googled CT1... this sounds pretty decent as well..

Thanks all

Hi James
Happy New Year. I am sure CT1 is a permanent adhesive sealer. Also sure that Arbormast is a butyl non setting sealant usually used for windows and the like. I bedded my new skin fittings with CT1. Realistically I think I would prefer a permanent solution and some hassle removing it in a decade or so.

Aquabondadhesives.com are promoting butyl sealing tape for use in swimming pools, that does suggest it is ok underwater

Hi Stuart, Happy New year to you to!

I am thinking Ct1, if Arbormast could be used for underwater fittings I think they would at least mention it somewhere..

CT1 also states it remains flexible so I think would do just the trick. watched the promo video... impressive stuff.

Understood. The other stuff is pu40 available from toolstation. It is made by sika and is fraction of the price of the chandlery stuff. It is as strong as sikaflex though so would need to be sliced off in the future

I have used this sealant many times for through hull fittings. I recently had to remove a fitting that was bedded with PU40, it had been on for a while. The sealant put up a very good fight but in the end I won. Have a look at the web address this stuff is good and well priced.

PURAFLEX 40 is a high modulus, one component, polyurethane hybrid based sealant and adhesive that remains permanently elastic and has good adhesion to most substrates.

Having used both, i am impressed with CT1 claim that it can be applied even when under water.

For PU40 good price from toolstation, and for CT1 good price from Travis Perkins (very good price if you have an account and can buy for trade price).

You have received good advice. The bearing housing screws onto the stern tube and the last thing you need is an adhesive sealant such as suggested by others. Polysulphide is the correct sealant to use. Arbokol 1000 is widely available although Boatlife Caulk will also suit. I usually put a ring of caulking cotton around the join as well. This will seal well and you stand a chance of getting it undone when the cutless next needs replacing.

I used Arbo BR on all PT and FC skin fittings, several years later it seems fine. Website does say marine fittings and bedding.

If you want non setting - then Arbo BR is the one to have.

If you want an adhesive I can't comment.

Did you call the people that built her?

By the way, I didn't use CT1 on the threads of the stern tube but only on the flange that bolts onto the sternpost. For the sterntube threads I used a liquid PTFE thread sealant; probably one of the Loctite products.

Just been to T.Norris in Isleworth to buy cutlass bearing. Outrigger had been pulled out of true they think by rope cutter so it would not slide in as it apparently should have done, but 30 minutes later their workshop had corrected the issue and fitted a new brass sleeved cutlass bearing in it... proper old school marine engineering business with STOCK, highly recommended!
