My old, clapped out 1990 vintage 2.5 Mercury outboard started second pull after 6 months sitting in the shed.Just like that ,two pulls and it went.And then again.This is unacceptable.

Fortunately you are not alone, clapped out is clearly incorrect! Great little engines and I suspect many of us leave them for 6 months over the winter and have them running again in a couple of pulls.

I put our old Mercury 2.5 in the cellar 4 years ago when we replaced it with a four stroke.
A recent change of mooring meant that it would be useful to have an outboard that could easily be chucked in the back of the car without havint to worru about filling the cylinder with sump oil..
So out came the old Merc, complete with 4 year old 2 stroke mix in its tank, and 3rd. or 4th. pull away it went and has been running sweetly all season.

Brought mine up from North Wales 12 months ago, had been sitting there for at least a year before, same petrol in tank, stood it in wheelie bin and started first pull, Johnson 4hp with funny throttle on top of engine casing. And here's me looking to swap it for a new 4 stroke!

Thats nothing-when I was about 13 years old in the early 1950's there was a neighbour who had an old Douglas motor bike in their back garden not covered up at all. This was a 1926 TT Replica with an enormous outside flywheel and cylinders pointing front and back and a huge magneto on top of the engine. This had been left there from 1939 when the chap was the first to volunteer from West Didsbury in Manchester to join up for the 2nd World War but did not return. So the bike had stood there for about 14 years. Anyway I bought it for 10 shillings pushed it home with some of my pals, took the top of the carburettor and poured in some petrol (not much H&S about then) after much jumping on the kick starter as it was a little seized away she started with an enormous cloud of smoke. I ran it for about 6 months on the roads when I got a licence at sixteen but it had an enormous long wheelbase and I never felt too safe so I felt very smart when I sold it at a profit £5 and bought a Rudge Ulster 4 valve bronze head which had enormous acceleration. I wish I had the Douglas now, or the Rudge or the Velocette KTT or the Flying Squirrel or the Dominator or the Boneville or even the Triumph 21!

Same here with my '96 Johnson 4hp Twin. Second pull with last years petrol. Been sitting in the boat all winter while laid-up. I even forgot to flush it through with fresh water.

no no don't do it, nooooo.
I need reverse, only thing letting the boat down, hanging off the back twisting the engine round to stop is a pain, especially in the lock flights. Will buy new as my luck would mean swapping a perfectly good outboard for a dud, only 4 strokes now but they are getting better.

Shame on you. Did you not know that the first 'modern' commercial two-stroke engine was patented by a Scot, Dugald Clerk? And now you're talking of going over to that arriviste German four-stroke rubbish
