Ulverston Canal

Hi All

Just been asked by a friend if it is still possible to use the Ulverston canal. I didn't think it was still open to the sea, but does anybody know more about it?

Hi-
The gates are in a ruinous state, unusable last time I saw them some years ago.

Factories use the canal as a water supply and there may be low level pipes.

Pretty walk though-

Entrance was concreted up many moons ago, nothing to stop you sailing up to the canal and having a pint at the bay horse though.
Although you would need shallow draught.

We used to use it for a raft race.

And have used it for skating, on a push bike, in winter.

A friend of mine has a house on the canal bank, very picturesque (if you ignore the enormous chemical factory)

There's a housing development that's been in the pipeline for years right on the canal bank. Developers bought the land of my mate years ago but ground works just started recently. Could have something to with making the area more attractive, pushes the property values up for when they get built.
