I've been reading some old threads about this.
Do any of the eager builders have any performance updates to offer please?
What happened to plans to come up with equivalents to the Jaycar kit? (I think that was principally Nigel :))
I gather that the designers say it won't work on cored hulls. However I heard a presentation recently from a UK based producer of USAF systems and in reply to a question they claimed that cored construction would make no difference. In fact they were about to equip a J105 belonging to someone I know. Anyone tried it on a cored hull? (That is a critical point to me, not curiosity!)
If anyone can give me working links to the original magazine articles about the Jaycar kit (or send me a pdf) I would be grateful - the links in the old threads don't work or only give you the first page of each. I also haven't seen the PBO feature (by Norman E?) but I have seen the YM one.
Thanks.

Edit - they did say you have to put the transducer directly onto the outer skin of a cored hull i.e. remove a circle of inner skin and core.

Edit 2 - aren't this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultrasoni...tEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item258864561d and this

both the Jaycar one?

It is very difficult to make real-world performance judgements on ultrasonic antifouling gadgets because observations are not made in a controlled experiment.

I fitted a Jaycar unit last year and as I keep an eye on the bottom of my boat with regular dives, I did observe that some light crustaceous growth around the area of the transducer did indeed disappear. However, this may also have been because the Coppercoat I had applied four months earlier was starting to do its job (apparently it takes a while to become active after the initial coating).

I don't think I would buy one of the commercial ultrasonic kits as they are too much money to risk. But the Jaycar kits only cost about €100 which in yachting terms is not worth worrying about. They are also quite fun to build if you are a practical sort. I hadn't done any electronics since school and it was quite an interesting project.

I started the big thread, http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?258391-Building-the-Ultrasonic-Antifouling-Kit-from-Jaycar
If you look near the end of the thread, post 336 on page 34 gives my last update. It certainly does have some effect as proved by barnacle growth in unprotected areas, e.g the rudder, and my experience of fouling appearing when one transducer became partly unscrewed.

Thanks Norman, yes I spent most of yesterday evening reading that!
Quite a long thread for the BE* era!
