Re: Get a Sling Box !

That looks a great way to get the BBC channels without the need for huge dishes, and we have a wired broadband service in the port. Can you give us an idiots guide as to how it works, and how to set it up. Thanks

Re: Get a Sling Box !

Me too and how it might work with wireless broadband?

Re: Get a Sling Box !

One of my previous business partners uses a Slingbox from his home here in the UK to a second home in the Canaries.
He says that it works quite well but you have to have good broadband uplink speeds - 500k is a bit boaderline.
Certainly no good for us here in Devon - I cant even gat 1Mb download let alone upload. (we might be getting "Bethere" ISP soon so that may change)
Also I wonder what internet speeds you get in the marinas - especially with WiFi.

Another point is that the Slingbox needs a PC in order to watch the TV - bit messy.

There are lots of advantages with a Slingbox however. If you connect to Sky+ you have full control over recordings as if at home.

You can get the Raymarine domes through most low cost internet retailers that sell Raymarine - as usual have a look at JG - their prices are from £2989 to £5799 - I see that they now have 3 sizes - 37cm, 45cm and a 60cm.
According to djefabs it was a very easy DIY operation to set it up - I think he said that he just plugged it all together and switched on.

We bought the 60STV for the new Princess 67 - and paid about £5700 ex VAT plus installation. Bear in mind though that the difficult bit on the installation is the mounting of the dishes/domes. Maricom installed ours and had to have some special s/s bases made to fit to the radar arch - they came up with a great idea - you make the bases so that you can get at all the bolts/nuts etc through the hole that you fix the base onto so that you dont have to remove any other panels etc..

Then there's making it look right - we put a dummy on the other side (in fact our dummy contains the ond terrestrial TV ant) - but djefabs redesigned his whole radar base and put his on top and IMO looks great.

Re: Get a Sling Box !

The slig box piggy backs on the scart of your sky box and plus. It then encodes the video and audio output and then it squirts it down a broad band connection to your client. Client can be a mac, PC or even a PDA/phone. We use a dell laptop with an HD output to our HD TV and it has worked flawlessly for the last two years in the South of France going via between 14 and 32 hops back to our sky box in the UK. You get a soft remote that allows you to control the sky box. The soft sky remote looks identical to the physical remote. The sling box has a couple of IR senders that you place near the sky box to control channels etc. The Sling box has three inputs, two of which you can define for your own use, e.g. two scarts and the third is an inbuilt free view box. All three sources are available to watch at the client end although only one at a time. We have the classic which doesn't support HD, but there are several newer versions that support HD. Sling media the supplier of the box run a finder service so that if you are not familliar with the set up routers and ip addresses then slng media takes care of it. Basically the sling box has a unique code which you enter on set up and when you need to connect to your box the sling client works out where in the world it is (via the finder service hosted by sling media FOC) and what sort of router/firewall it has to tunnel through. (This is all using UpNp for the more technical of you, which is supported by most broad band home routers these days)

OBVIOUSLY if your broad band connection isn't that broad then the picure quality degrades. You do need a 350k up or you won't get a good picture. If you want to try it you can download the sling client and I'll pm you my sling box finder key and let you in for a test.

Cheers Wake up.

PS I watched the Moncao GP down here yesterday because I couldn't be arsed to go and watch it in the rain.

Mapism - yup, I agree with you but I expect our parents thought we were spoiled brats when we were young so nothing has changed, just the expectations are different

[/ QUOTE ]LOL, good point.
I just realize that it was actually Nick who mentioned swmbo, not yourself.
I wish you that at least she does enjoy boating the way God intended!...
Fwiw, I heard praises about this product, in terms of price/performance/size, but I don't know if it meets your coverage requirements.

Re: Ultimatum - get Sat TV or you\'re boating solo

Agree with the slingbox comments. As long as you have broadband you can use it - so in a lot of anchorages around the island as well as most of the marinas. The advantage is that it streams fom your home tv so you use it to tape on sky planner and rewatch when required. Also good for radio. We have used it succesfully for a number of years now. The added advantage is that you can use it anywhere not the just the boat, on your desktop at work or on your mobile phone, you only need the one slingbox.

Hi Mike

I also have a slingbox with Sky +, works pretty well anywhere, altough Alcudia is a bit light on Broadband in the marina. A good alternat if youdont mind using a PC to pick up the connection.

We are out on the 5th June, if you can have a word about the weather for me....
