Just read that the UKHO are changing the contour colours on charts and also dropping the purple 'flash' that was by lights. Seems it's a money saving exercise and guess what, the good old RYA have gone along with it and sold us down the river, quite literally, once again! So anyone who used the colours as a rough indication of least depth will be in for a bit of a shock.

I've just emailed Imray, who actually make charts for yachtsmen, to ask if they have any plans to change. As expected, they do not. I know their contour colours are different to Admiralty (darker blue = deeper, white = shallow) but if you can't live without the magenta flashes then here's your answer.

At first glance it's rather irritating that they've changed it in a way that directly concerns us leisure sailors.

Odd that in this day and age of computers, they can't publish both types of charts: leisure with the 2-5M contour, and commercial with the 5M contour. One would have thought that it's just a file > print > leisure version or commercial version. It's like they're still using India ink!

But at the end of the day, the UKHO isn't relevant as their charts are inferior to Imray's simply down to the printing process and the paper they use. Imray's colours are fine too.

The UKHO are also irrelevant as I can't remember the last time I used a paper chart; I use the chart plotter, computer, iPad, iPhone (s)....

So I suppose it's inevitable that they flog few of their charts to leisure sailors.

Sure, but the RYA teaches with UKHO full Admiralty charts, or at least they did.

What, exactly, are they changing?

From memory, they are removing the colour distinction between 5m and 2m, and also removing the magenta flash on lit marks. The latter is being replaced by a "halo" in the same colour as the light, but I think people are complaining that this isn't very visible.

I thought one of the reasons for magenta was to show reasonably well under red lighting. How will, eg, a green "halo" appear?
Or was the article in April 1st edition?
