I may be wrong but perhaps UK second hand prices are lower than same sort of item in EU. Bigger market? Europeans not wanting to add VAT to import price so no cross border sales?

Sterling is low just now, but not VAT compensation low.

Am I wrong?

Certainly when I was looking 3-4 months ago, UK was cheaper but even allowing for currency costs it wasn't worth buying there and paying VAT to import to France.

On the boats we’re looking at the prices for the ones that sell are about the same. There are some that don’t sell that have gradually reduced but have been on the market a couple of years, but they’re usually bad boats. Perhaps your impression is coloured by this as the ones you can see have by definition not yet sold.
The good boats we see are selling within days so you have to watch like a hawk.

You are buying in Europe?

We’ll buy where the perfect boat appears, I look all over the place regularly. Prices seem reasonably consistent for a given quality of boat. Apart from the US, those people have a wildly optimistic view of the value of their “upgrades”

I have lots of asking price data since around November ‘23, for used yachts across UK and Europe. IMO the asking prices for popular models aren’t hugely different between the UK and Europe, but the condition (and therefore chance of achieving near that asking price) is very different in different European countries.

The Dutch and German boats I see advertised are consistently the best presented, with Scandinavian countries a close second. Italy has a surprising number of well kept used boats. British boats are somewhere in the middle, with some gems but also a lot of tired examples with outdated kit. French boats are nearer the bottom, usually scruffy and well used.

My French broker had a list of achieved prices which I thought was too high and suggested a lower asking price. Don't want it hanging around 1,000 miles from home.

Had to repair the rudder - now done - so boat on market next week.

Will see what happens. I am wrecked with cleaning.
