I'm interested in buying a Ferretti custom line navetta 28 and sailing from the UK (Cornwall,Falmouth) to Malta (Valletta), however i want to drive the boat myself with friends and family, and the boat will only be used for private leisure. What is the shortest (legal) way to get a licence to drive a boat over 24 metres and under 200,000kg?

Welcome to the forum .
Are you sure it’s actually over the 24 M load line length ? 92/93 ft is border line .
Builders are concoius of the owner / occupier / skipper thing and help with LLL calc .
Have you seen any existing reg certs ? Or other paper work from the builder

Bow and bathing platform ( not shown ) are temporary structures so don,t count in the calcs —- all above board apparently.

Find out 1 st , if it’s under supported by paper work then the pressure is off in the strict legal sense .
Any thing you do is then voluntary training wise .

Blimey.
You're interested in buying such small ship, drive her yourself, and you have no clue about her basic requirements? Forgive my cynic attitude, but that sounds unreal.
I hope you're aware that she doesn't come with IPS and joystick...
...On second thought, forget that. It's an old farts thing!

Welcome to the asylum anyway, and congratulations.
I've never been onboard a Navetta, but allegedly she's Norberto's favourite vessel, so she's bound to be good, I guess! :encouragement:

Couple of mates of mine
One after having a go on my Sunseeker Porto 35 , one August summer hol with us in the SoF — after a “ Southampton “ a few week later bought a Pred 90 something
Same rational under the 24 M rule .
Next Easter it arrived on its new berth in the Bladricks .
Few days lesions he was fine - mind he had very good hand eye co- ordination shooting in the U.K.
sold it after a year - wife ( who had never slept on a boat - they hotel d it Cannes with us ) - did not like the wave lapping sound - even in a mud cabin .
The other sold up for N of £120M and waded in with a Benetti 125 or was if a 127 Classic .
Crew of 7 from day 1 ,- was in my marina actually ( kids same school etc )
In the end he “toyed up “with a master craft and a Boston whaler outrage 32 with a pair of massive Yans —- so he could @ least drive .Attached by outriggers to the mother ship .
We used to raft up his BW and my Porto 35 in the Lerins —— kids has more fun doing that .
Infact before the “ toys “ I’d end up taking all the kids out snorkelling / fishing in my P35
With his son saying “ dad why can,t we have a boat like [ my name ]
Charted it a few seasons - did tge Caribbean thing - had it moved etc a few years then sold it as the kids and Infact the wife got fed up - wife fed up with crew / nanny hassle on board .

They charter boats now - his other hobby always was a bigger hobby is planes - has a gulfstream .

So I don,t see ( these days ) the problem with wading in large - seen it it can work and does work .
