I bought my first boat (Beneteau First 26) 5 years ago and just followed the previous owner’s instructions and Registered the boat. It’s just coming up for renewal and I’m wondering if I actually need to register and what the advantages are. I don’t ever intend to leave UK waters and only use the boat on the River Dart and along the South Coast. I’ve done a few internet searches but I can’t really find any clear information about the benefits of registration. Anyone any thoughts on this ?

You dont say if thats Part I or Part III (Small ships register)

Either way the answer to your question for your intended use is No

However Part I is useful evidence, but not proof, of ownership and expensive/complex to re-register if allowed to lapse.

Part III no point unless you do intend going foreign. Easy to register if you let it lapse but then change your mind. Many people would probably keep a Part III registration going ........ only works out a £7 per year !

If it’s Part One, it’s a good idea to keep it going. A buyer can take out a mortgage on a Part One registered boat and, if I may correct VicS on one point, Part One registration IS proof of title. The Certificate of Registry is not, but the Transcript of Register (always ask for this if buying a Part One Register boat) IS.

I doubt many marine mortgages are issued on second hand 26 foot boats. Part One sounds like overkill for a small boat used primarily in the U.K. SSR / Part 3 might be handy if get more ambitious and fancy a cross channel trip

Thanks to everyone for all those replies. It is Part 3 and I think, as someone said, it works out at only £7 per year so perhaps I’ll keep it going just in case we get blown across the channel !

Either way can I just add a well done to the MCA Registry office who are prompt, helpful and polite. I have had nothing but good service from them.
