Hi - I am planning a trip next summer from Denmark - to UK - through the channel and down along Spain and Portugal - out to Madeira, from there to Azores and back through the Channel to Denmark

Do anybody have experience with the route Madeira to Azores in the summer ?

Thanks
Best regards
Gunnar

Went that way(ish) this summer - left Portugal for Madeira in May and routed back to Lagos in Portugal via several of the islands in the Azores by late July.

Winds this year were fairly light, so a fair amount of motor sailing involved.

Strongest winds from Portugal to Porto Santo - lightest winds, Santa Maria to Faial. Best sailing, Terceira to San Miguel.

Visited Porto Santo, Funchal, Santa Maria, Horta, Pico, Terceira, San Miguel and Lagos. (By car looked at Quinta de Lorde and Culheta on Mediera, and Vitorio on Terceira).

Loved all the islands and the people. The trip from San Miguel to Lagos was least enjoyed by the crew.

Enjoy!

Did a similar trip last year - should have spent more time in the Spanish rias. Our passage from Madeira to Azores (Santa Maria) took about 5 days. Recommend you give clearance to west end of Madeira as we got trounced in the acceleration zone; more searoom would have made it much more comfy. The literature warns of a probable beat all the way; we were a bit better off - could only make west at first but wind veered and we ended up on a reach.
Find time to anchor over in the Ilhas Desertas in the Madeira group. It's a nature reserve but the "vigilantes" offered us a buoy and gave us a guided tour.
