we do like a bit of telly now and then and currently have a spindly traditional aerial strung up the mizzen which works excellently. Downside is that it is very ugly and needs removing when we go sailing. We have a spar across the mizzen which would have room for a more compact aerial that we could leave up there, something like this:

however, we tried that one and can't receive anything on it.

Any recommendations for another one to try?
thanks

I have installed the Glomex VT300 - AVIOR which appears to work well (and is a lot cheaper than most marine ariels). The plus side for me is that it works for both TV and FM with outputs for each at the small amplifier box, so only the one ariel needed. We are also in a poor reception area near Crinan.

While we on the subject of TV aerials , we have an 64 ins TV and it won't fit through the companion door , on our sailing boat , has any one else had this problem and how did you manage to get it in ?

Am I right i thinking this needs power? Power itself is not really an issue as obviously won't be watching telly without power, but the cable run is a nuisance.

The power is generally used by a little amp that sits on the cabin end of the co-ax going to the antenna, so not generally difficult to sort out - I just tapped off the lighting circuit

How glam: if I was in the Land Of The Sun, I think I might like to watch my 64telly from the dinghy whilst supping on a sundowner. Alas, being work bound in Central London and mostly in the rain we will stick with our 20 inch for a bit ... :-)

Sell your current boat and order a new one to be built. The boatbuilder will install the tv and then build the boat around it.
Thats what the builder of my boat seems to have done with any fittings i need to get to.

Curiously a subject I've been looking at this week. Got an antenna up the mast (an old glomex?) but never needed to watch tv on the boat so never investigated it. Living aboard now with tv in storage and nowhere else to record stuff, I do occasionally wish I could watch stuff: Premier Marinas's wifi is too rubbish for anything, let alone iplayer. iplayer etc take up too much data for my 3G/4G dongle. And ironically we still own a tv licence. Saturday I was tracing wires. Discovered the signal amp for the aerial. Traced more wires. Added power to the signal amp. Signal was still rubbish. Discovered the amp had a fuse which was burned out. Bought a replacement. Still rubbish. In parallel to this I'm trying to set up a streaming tv server/PVR with a raspberry pi and a dvb dongle and the urge to get that working now I've started overrode financial prudence so at lunchtime I impulse bought a £20 indoor aerial. Miraculously it seems to work, although I currently have it string on the coach roof which as an indoor aerial won't be much cop when it rains. Also the power cord from the adapter is pitifully short: 1m or so but the aerial is actually 12v so a smoothed supply from the batteries might work. So ASDA (the one at mudchute is right by the DLR so should be convenient for you) seem to have a few: All indoor but might be OK if you're not going with the full-on mast-attached arrangement. Mine's branded "One of all" and says "up to 38dB gain" and "4G filter" and seems at first glance to be OK though not sure I'm getting all the MUXes I could at full power. HD channels seem OK though.
