I have a swing mooring on the River Deben in Suffolk and a 17 Foot speed boat that on no accounts am I going to Antifoul. I was wondering how long people with experience think I could leave the boat on the mooring and it will not foul up. I am hoping I could get 2 weeks and then just pull it out for a washdown. Do people think I could get any longer than this

Thanks

Dennis

Every year the type of growth on East Coast varies, from mini corals, barnycules, assorted types of weed and this year a bumper crop of dangly sponges about 4 inches long.
Doubt you will see anything in two weeks but after month suspect you will get stuff starting to call your hull home.
Here at RCC anything that was not hauled less than 8-10 months ago is sporting an impressive amount of fouling especially on props and rudders.
Several reports of overheating due to weed being drawn into raw water intakes.
Out of 15 boats on last organised cruise five or six skippers noticed running temps above normal on or or both engines.
One boat could not get above 10 knots without serious temperature rise.
Seems to be a very fine weed/algae combination.
Just about every type of A/F on the market being used.
From experience, the worst thing you will probably encounter over that time frame will be hull staining at the waterline.

Thanks for that info. I might therefore if I am lucky get 3 weeks. Hauling her out is not a big issue as it is only 17 foot but I am weighing up the idea of launching each time or leavening her in for periods

Thanks

We used to leave our grp tender in the water when down on holiday for a couple of weeks. Caravan, Woolverstone. When it was pulled out the whole underwater was covered in tiny barnacles, this would have been school holidays so water quite warm. Scraping them all off took almost as long as it would have to just pull the tender out each day!

a decent chain and padlock regards boat to outboard and boat to mooring would be good idea, no matter how secure or visible you think the boat is.

I have seen literally hundreds of boats on the Deben on swing moorings and I have not seen one padlocked to the mooring yet

suspect we are not talking about speedboats with outboards but sailing boats which no sane person would bother ransacking or stealing ?
Cannot recall any speedboat being left to its own devices on exposed swinging mooring !
Can recall outboards being nicked from boats in moored in secure boat clubs and boats parked in driveways.

Well come and look up the Deben you will see both

Err........... actually RCC boats are frequent visitors, have been told it is a really nice destination.
Could well be joining them the next time they come up. :)

Worth the trip - the Deben is lovely and an overnight swinging mooring at Ramsholt for dinner at the pub is a good option. So too is Tidemill Yacht Harbour in Woodbridge but needs to be timed right to get up the river and over the cill.
