I am visiting En-ger-land for a week or so and have come with a shopping list of things that are difficult to get in the Canaries. I thought it might be useful to give an idea of things difficult to get where you are to help those thinking of going off cruising to take with them, geddit?
My list is:
Red ensign, shedloads of Union Jacks for sale there which are, of course, the wrong flag.
Pump for Lavac heads, Henderson spares difficult to obtain.
JB weld. I keep stacks of this on the yacht, so useful for all sorts of repairs. A thread on another forum mentioned an engine exhaust elbow for example. Can be a lifesaver in places, various (obscure).
So, how about it, any more reccomends??

Spares for a Mk 4 henderson are not available, but Mk 5 spares are. The diaphragm from a Mk 5 will fit a Mk4, but not the valves. I have a Mk 5 top casing in my "come in handy" bag which I plan to fit to the Mk4 on my Lavac at the appropriate time, but I don't know if that particular Bodge will work.

I can't try to add engine spares unless I know the engine, but the elbow will corrode. If it has corroded from the inside, it is possible for salt water to corrode the manifold too. I have a Yanmar with a high port mixing elbow rather than the standard one. It's a substantial bronze casting so I'm safe but I understand the steel ones are a particular problem. My (very) old volvo had a corroded and cracked manifold made from "unobtanium". so the £200 I spent on the elbow the year before was largely wasted.

Cheers for that, I actually got one in Arthurs in Gosport!!
What I had in mind though were people in Greece or Venezuela or wherever posting about items they cant get locally and wished they had taken from the UK. Postage to foreign lands from the UK can be expensive and time delaying too, so its more to prepare cruisers before they go.
