UK Boating - it's the best!!

Guys,

Having experienced a whole week off in the tropical climes of the UK, I'd just like to point out that SWMBO (Linda) and I have had an absolutely fabulous week boating in the UK. It's been emotional (!) but we've all been waiting for the weather for a while. Humu Humu is now unfortunately heading home on Sunday to PS from CYH.

I've been around the UK bit for about 40 years or so and have spent many holidays in Torquay, Greatstone, New Romney, Hastings, Rye, etc (+usual EU/US stuf :)) My American wife, not so. 100+f is easy for her whilst I melt at about 70f. The week away we've had has been "spectacular" - Linda's words... We've sacrificed Dallas sun or European Rivera for a trip West.

The weather has been brilliant, the company that we found along the way, excellent. From a SWMBO perspective, this would normally be a "y'all owe me big style" thing, but on entering Dartmouth from a long, easy passage from the Solent - Linda actually said "I thought these places only existed on the BBC! Beautiful! Wow!"

I've already commented on Henry's pictures in the other post - they really capture the essence of "going west".

Back in the Solent now and we're still having fun. Let's hope the weather stays.

Yep, we have had a really good summer, the first one for 5 or so years. Unfortunately we have not had much time on board, due to our sale and purchase. Just hoping for another summer next year. You are spot on about the scenery, and Henry's pics show how stunning our coastline can be.
 
For the first time in 20 years I've regretted not being able to pop down to the boat and potter about the coast. Greece has consistently been around 40c I we don't miss that. An English summer at 25c is more agreeable and we've enjoyed this one including getting on our bikes.
Hey ho we fly tomorrow to pick up the Bertram, currently 28c, and head up into the Sporades. What a life.
 
The changing variable UK climate,weather and tides are what makes UK boating so interesting and challenging.Always something different to keep you on your toes.The different seasons giving you something to look forward to.A wide choice of totally different and individual coasts and rivers to choose from.
Tired of proper boating (and life) then its off the the Med retirement retreat for you,the same dull brown horizon(and suntan) from Gib to Turkey and 50% of your boaty time spent either at home on the interweb or in an airport lounge somewhere trying to get the car you actually booked. .:)

A somewhat jaded view of med boating which doesn't gel with mine. Both UK and Med offer very different experiences, both of which I enjoy. To dismiss the cultures of 10 or more countries with the same dull brown horizon indicates perhaps you need to open your eyes a little more. And what do you need a car for anyway!
 
To be fair I've actually been out to the Med a couple of times this season too on friends' boats and it was lovely. The biggest thing for me being the water temperature and using the swim platform for the purpose it was designed for.

Folks who boat in the Med always seem to appear just a tad defensive about their choice of boating location ,why should that be ?

Also it is human nature to defend your position in the face of dismissive and frankly somewhat arrogant put downs. What's wrong with making your own choices and respecting the choices of others. You will note that I defended Med boating without putting down the UK.
 
We may of had some banter in the past but I hope it is just that, light hearted banter.

Boating overseas when you are UK based takes some degree of effort and so you will need to justify it to yourself. The big plus is of course the weather. We've had a cracking year in the UK but that isn't always the case.

I think UK and Med boating are probably quite different, one isn't better than the other, just different.

I wouldn't say no to either :)

exactly so. In an ideal world I would have two boats, one in each camp.
