Is it feasible to anchor behind the pier, or is it too full of fishing boats & general detritus to make it worthwhile? I don't want to go too far up Loch Snizort as it just means retracing my wake tomorrow. The other possibility in a light SW wind is Duntulum Bay, but that looks a bit way out there for a bear of little bravery like me.

Uig must be one of the least attractive anchorages, in Skye anyway. It's not very sheltered, and very disturbed by boat and ferry traffic. I'm sure you could find a spot pretty much behind the pier, but there are a lot of moorings. More room, but less shelter further out.

Duntulm is an attractive spot, and the walk ashore to Ru Hunish is spectacular, but (why is there always a but?) swell finds its way in. Good clean holding though, and a good setting out place for crossing the Little Minch.

There are a lot of moorings in behind the pier, in the best shelter, though it should be possible to find a spot. Plenty of room further out, but less shelter. I'll be there on Thursday (as a ferry passenger).

It's a good setting off point for crossing the Little Minch. Kilmaluaig Bay is another possibility in that neck of the woods. Untenable in an easterly, but otherwise OK.

Grrrrrrrr I wrote a post, and it disappeared into the ether, so I wrote another, and now the first one's turned up. Oh well, two for the price of one. :D

How about the cliffs at Aros Bay on the other side of the Loch? We spent a night there in utterly dreadful conditions 3 years ago. Bit of kelp but quite sheltered.

I got here before your post, & to answer my own question & as you say, there is all sorts of junk behind the pier, so I'm a bit further out. It's not pretty, but there's little wind & no waves, & now I'm well dug in to the mud I might as well stay. Should have gone to Duntulum, but I've got 4G here, so I can moan about here whereas I might not have been able to there.

The ferry came & went once. The fishing & fishfarm boats are all tied up now so it's quiet at least.

When we stopped in at Uig, the fishermen were really friendly and let us use their mooring right in behind the pier.

Just back in signal after a couple of days- a bit late to the party but I'll just add that Uig is about five miles from my mooring, in loch Greshornish. I might be biased but Greshornish is far and away the best anchorage in terms of shelter in the whole of Snizort. Downside is it's a bit more of a detour if you're just passing Skye, and there's only a few hotels rather than a village shop. There is a tiny shop with limited opening hours if you make it all the way up the head of the loch to the campsite.

It was only a quick overnight stop before departing Skye this morning early with the tide. I realized that better stuff was up loch, but I wanted to catch the early tide. The real reason I chose Uig rather than Duntulum was I didn't think there'd be any mobile signal out there. I wandered through Duntulum bay this morning on my way past for a nosy, & there's 4G full bars from a clomping great aerial on the hill just above the hotel! I could actually see the magic moon beams whizzing between the aerial on the hill & my phone :-).
