Need to buy hand held vhf sharpish, looking at the very budget end of the market, mailspeed marine are advertising the XM V.H.F 2000, and the Star M298, anyone out there tried/owned one of the above, feedback gratefully recieved, or has anyone out there got a reasonable 2nd hand unit for sale? Need one before Tuesday 13th. so have to get skates on. Cheers, Mike.

had some sub-£100 h'h VHFs on display a coupla weeks back. No idea exactly what, but might be worth a call. It's a real shop too, not just a mail order specialist.

We've got the M298. Not a bad unit, easy to use, will take external speaker-mic if required, no problems with it to date. However, not water proof/resistant in any way, so get a proper bag for it, and no indication of battery charge remaining.

I've got a XM2000. It works very well and friends have commented on the strength and quality of the signal. My only gripe is that the channel selection, volume and on/off controls are twist knobs which are hard to operate when it is in its waterproof case - not impossible but tricky when it is very cold and the plastic is stiff. If I had the chance again, I'd look for one with push button controls.
