Not sailing related but a customer of ours oddly asked us for a load of galvanised shackles today. No doubt most come from China nowadays but does anyone know of a decent UK manufacturer that could supply large quantities relatively quickly?

UK, no - Van Beest in Holland is the best bet. They have UK distributors (no idea who). Van Beest still make in Holland. Also known as Green Pin shackles. They make 2 types a lower strength type called a Grade A and a higher strength type called a Grade B but the Grade B only come in bigger sizes, too big for leisure use and I don't recall the smallest. The shackles are rated and I think each shackle Proof Tested to 2 times WLL and batch tested for UTS.

After that your best source is American, Peerless, Crosby and Campbell - but as you say much now comes in from China (some of which are excellent)

Rope assemblies could have several thousand on a courier today.
They'll have Crosby in stock, http://www.ropeassemblies.co.uk/product.asp?id=21&ref=1&ref2=2
In industry Crosby are the most commonly used "top of the range" shackles.
