Separately and together the Smeetons led remarkable lives in a world that already seems rather distant. The biography is very nicely written by Clark who was Smeeton's Godson.

Clark himself is also interesting. He took a yacht from Murmansk to the Black Sea after the iron curtain came down. Ultimately his is a very sad story.
See here for the RCC account of the voyage: https://liveicomgrshot.blob.core.windows.net/rccfiles/Uploadedpdfs/Logs/121111_08092016_1993 p89.pdf
Thanks for that. Where is Wild Goose now? Is she in Crinan?? Will take a look when next passing, but the picture certainly looks like her, cannot remember the name with certainty. Just above 2nd lock from sea.

And to the OP - great vid - thanks. The sea towards the end is wild. Not often seen on video...

Why was he tallowing the sheets? I've never heard of that before.
Is it just to allow them to run through the blocks easier or is there another purpose?

I have never heard of that either and would like to know more.

From Once is Enough [p58]:

"We had terylene sheets [...]. The sheets passed through two blocks and over the cockpit coaming, which was cut away and sanded down to take them. Beryl was continually putting tallow on the sheets, and as a result, in spite of the continual movement and tension, they were undamaged by chafe."

I knew their daughter Clio when she was sailing in Turkey with Ken Weagle. She told some very interesting tales of her family and early life, including how she bought and smuggled a puppy onto the family boat.
Here is Clio on their 36 foot steel ketch, Pescadou in April 2008.

As for Tsu Hang, the boat was thrown end over end and dismasted, Beryl was thrown overboard and managed to swim back to the boat despite a dislocated shoulder, and they managed to jury rig a sail to get to one of the ports in Chile. Once is enough tells the story of both dismastings.
