Well I don't think it will plane, with 3 large dutchmen aboard. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Ok for just getting to and from the shore I'd have thought. If you want to go exploring in it then maybe 3.5-4hp would be better.

Most of the times it will be an average Duch man and an average Dutch woman (in weight and size that is /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) using the boat. It will be used mostely for to and from mooring/anchorage I guess.

Thanks for the info!

I find that it Pushes my 2.6 Metre Flubber along as quickly as the Mariner 4HP 2 Stroke that I had before. I'm guessing that the fact that it is noisier, according to some, than equivalent 2 Strokes is because of the lack of a water jacket to insulate the sound.

Dont forget that the 2.3 tohatsu and the 3.5 tohatsu differ in that the 3.5 has a clutch, a useful feature. Having had one of each I really prefer the 3.5 version.

The 2.3 is in bits while I try to make its ignition system work well. It is an old magneto ignition version which died the morning after a trip in the fast tide and pitch dark to the outside moorings off Yarmouth. Scary that it chose to die when it was safe to die.

In a recent race to a beach with 2 adults + 2 children on board both boats , a Honda 2.3 4 stroke on a Bombard AX3 easily beat an Avon Redcrest (3.1m) with a tohatsu 3.5 2 stroke both going flat out

Looking around and talking to a lot of engineers for the same thing myself I seem to hear a common theme. The Tohatsu, also rebadged as Mercury and at least one other, is fine if you are not going to be in river water,ie. stuff with sediment in it. If you are eventually the water ways will block. Several engineers have warned of this. Also the Honda is basically a horticultural unit, marinised. and not the best, trading on a v. strong name. Their bigger engines are fantastic! The Yam 2.0 and the Suzuki 2.2 two stroes are the most bullet proof it would appear. If you get a Yam it would have to be 2nd hand but a new Suzook is just under £300 and I suspect what I will be getting next week. Best of luck.

All the way through the Med and West Indies - USA I used a 2 HP Suzuki (spelling?) on an Avon Redcrest and AB roll up. Very very good indeed - powerful enough and survived several dunking!
In Panama I got a 5hp Mercury - good motor too - because of the long distances between anchorage and landing places - excellent for that - but the weight is a bit of an issue and now I am back in European waters would prefer a 2hp.

Hi, I used to run a 12 foot Tinny with a Mercury 8 HP but could never lift it on to the boat. When they went I bought a New 2.4 Rubber Ducky and a new Suzuki 2.2 2/ outboard...brilliant the o/board weighs 12 kg and i can lift the o/b and the rubber ducky on deck on my own, a major consideration!!!

One dislike the motor starts pushing you as soon as it starts but I will get used to it

All the best from Molly Down Under & Nick
