Just a quick question. After a few deck repairs, one job this weekend is to sand back and re-paint the deck-head or ceiling. Currently it is in a yellowing high gloss, but a nice white satin or eggshell appeals (my beams are painted not varnished) would offset the panelling better IMO.

Can anybody recommend a good paint?

I use ordinary leyland gloss. with alot of effort given to preparation the finish is unbeatable.

one thing to consider...

shiney surfaces generate more condensation than non shiney ones...

my gloss varnish was suffering from the formulation of condensation... so i rubbed it down (again!) and washed it with a thinned down coat... result! very soft sheen but with the integrity of gloss.

hope this helps.

Weathershield has a anti fungal built into the paint is very flexible and is designed for harsh environments..............

Don't know why it went yellow for Casey.......... smoke or poor preperation, remeber weathershield is a 3 part process, read the instructions on line.

Failing this any "GOOD EXTERIOR" paint will do

I found that Dulux Weathersheild went yellow in a season

[/ QUOTE ] Been using Weathershield for quitea few years now, and never had that problem with the white. Dark Blue tends to fade a bit after a couple of seasons, but white has always stayed whit for me.

My deck head is painted with Johnstones kitchen and bathroom paint. Silk finish, in "Antique cream". This sets off the blue deck beams (Dulux Heritage Boathouse Blue Eggshell) beautifully. Very condensation resistant, and in good nick a year after it was applied. This was applied over very old gloss that was simply rubbed down. I live aboard, and have this paint in both the galley and shower areas, with no signs of breakdown at all. From memory, it was about a tenner for a 2.5 litre pot from my local discount store. I'd definitely use this again.

Must have been the Solent air!

[/ QUOTE ] Nothing 'pure' round here - its all the stinkies coming out of Peters - plus the cross channel ferries, a couple of HSS's, the odd warship (when they can afford the fuel bills) and half a dozen VLCCs making for Soton - then theres the sewage outfall just a mile above my mooring.... yes the solent really is 'clean' /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif)

From bare (ply) wood I did aluminium primer, three coats of Dulux Trade undercoat and two coats of Dulux trade gloss. No probs at all and looks very well 3 years down the line.
