I have dug out of the loft an old handbearing compass that I got as part of a job lot at auction many years ago.
The bowl needs topping up and I have read the previous posts on fluids etc. but the main problem is trying to find batteries that fit into the handle to enable the back light to work.
When I first looked at it I assumed 2 'C' cells would fit but they are slightly too fat, I then bought some battery convertors from Maplins (you put a AA battery inside a plastic housing that makes it the same size as a C cell) and machined down the outside of the convertor to enable it to fit but they are then to long!

Any idea what batteries it was designed to take?

I have a vague memory of paper cased batteries from my childhood or did I imagine them.
The latest plan is to make a battery pack from 6 AAA Ni-Cds and use a redundant ac/dc convertor/charger.

It might be the model which was used to align an aircraft's internal compasses. The erk stood outside and took a bearing which was verified by the warm pilot inside.

In one version the torch unscrewed for separate use.

Can you access the bulb? It should have the voltage and wattage stamped on the base. I think you are on a winner to get it illuminated, as modern batteries are much beefier, yet smaller.

Perhaps one of these?

Details on Small Battery Company site. Otherwise, you might find something else on the site which is suitable.

(no connections to the site, btw).
