Tyneham village in Dorset has anyone been there to have a look and a walk around, we are thinking of going for a look and just wondered what peoples thoughts were, is it worth going

We went there a few years ago, and found it to be well worth the visit, and very interesting. Afterwards, you can go for a great walk along the cliff path, which have fantastic views.

Well worth going to. If you're boat is in Weymouth do the the other way round and take the boat to Worbarrow Bay, tender ashore, follow the 1 mile path inland, walk around the village and then back to the boat.

I've just looked at Google Earth for Tyneham.. Fascinating - never heard of it.
But what is the obvious geophysical structure to the north please ? Lizards' airport ?

Military ground. Mainly used for tank operations. Also Lulworth range, used for target practise, all part of the Poole Basin. Again, beautiful part of the country, well worth exploring.

So, not far off with my original hypothesis :blush:
I should have known. I did the traditional Exercise TopLine from Dryad when based in Portland ... I knew I didn't like walking in the dark on a moonless night .

If "Harbour lives" is on the ITV player, might not be as its a local programme I assume, it might be worth a look as they went there this week.

Absolutely it is worth a look and wander around. I first visited maybe 30 years ago and have been back for walks many times. There is a new "museum" in a restored barn that is also worth visiting. It is still free to enter Tyneham but visitors are now asked for a small contribution (honesty box), which I had no issue with paying after I had seen the museum area.
Tyneham itself and surrounding roads can be shut when the army is firing, which is generally not at weekends. I have just checked and they have started their summer "no firing" season so it should all be open from now till Monday 1 September. Tyneham access road and car park closes at dusk.
Googling "Lulworth ranges" gives you relevant websites, phone numbers, firing times, range closures/opens etc.
Incidentally when they are firing and I am afloat I have been told by range control to stay south of the 50.34 latitude line and that "if you look north you may see fall of shot". I have yet to see that happen though I have observed who and what is firing when on the land and within the range boundaries. So I know its possible that some tank newbie could get the elevation wrong and shoot the sea. Perhaps that is one of their "wind the sergeant up" challenges...?!

yes boat is in Weymouth and we often visit worbarrow bay but never been to the village, we will do what you say and drop anchor and tender ashore to go and have a look as the kids seem keen on having a nose around as well which was a bit of a surprise, I will take a look when we go down for our 2 week stay on the boat. we are doing IOW first week so I may stop there on the way back

Tyneham Village breaks your heart. I don't want to big it up too much because it's not jaw droppingly unique or achingly beautiful, but the longer you stay there the more the melancholy, of lives frozen but gone, creeps up on you, and you can never subsequently quite shake the place.
