Had our first proper run in the new (to us) Gibsea 33 last Thursday, Chichester to Swanwick, and the following came to light (no pun intended!)

1. The large gas burner on the Eno oven will not stay alight when the button is released. The burner stays on as long as the button remains depressed. There's plenty of gas, and I have thoroughly cleaned the burners - the smaller burner works fine.

2. The Raymarine ST 4000 Wheelpilot clutch lever stays put all the time port hand corrections are made, but once the pilot steers to starboard, the clutch lever moves back to the off position. I have a feeling the wheel unit is knackered - the pilot itself is working fine.

Any ideas/answers would be much appreciated.

#1 will be the flame sensor. There's a little sensor which checks you've got something burning and cuts the gas if not. Check that the sensor is actually near the flame*. On my *oven* the burner had twisted so that the sensor was no longer in the flame. Twisting it back and doing up the screw which allowed it to turn solved the problem (well, for 2 years until last week when the whole thing fell apart anyway). Not familiar with an "Eno" oven (Is it the only worthwhile part of the Roxy galley set?) but you're probably talking about a hob burner here: Flame sensor tends to be pretty much in the flame so could just need replacing: I'll guess that if spares are available, it's available as a spare

* it'll be a pokey sticky-outy bit of metal with no other apparent purpose

Problem with the wheelpilot is common. Wear on the lever pivot. Bungy cord to hold it in place might work. Replacement drives are little better and if you are planning to keep the boat worth considering fitting a below deck ram. More expensive of course but a much better job.

There was a problem with one gas hob which I think was Eno. There seemed to be some distortion that restricted the inward travel of the nob, thus preventing the latching of the safety device. You can test this by removing the knob and inserting a piece of paper into the knob. (The knob bottomed on the front plate). Maybe the same could happen with the oven?

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

Did the problem start after you cleaned the burners? On my Techimpex the flame sensors only work (but work well) if one of the little flames is playing directly one them. If you clean the burner and put the top back on just a few degrees out of position, no flame on detector and no staying lit. Worth checking?

Thanks for responding, but no, the cleaning came after the problem. I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure you can only reassemble the burner in the correct position because it has lugs and slots. It does seem to indicate a temperature sensor problem. Not back on the boat now until Easter, but I'll try all these suggestions.

Mine has lugs and slots too, but the slop in them is just enough to misalign the flamelet. Guess how I discovered.

If you find you do need to replace the thermocouple, you can get them from Socal in Southampton, who also give good advice.

My old over had the same problem. I took it to a Caravan repair shop and they gas fitter there said the oven was working properly but the gas pipe to the burner had filled with dust and debris. Once cleaned out with an air kine, it was fine. He checked all the pipework and junctions in the cooker and charged me £50.00. I thought it a fair price for the peace of mind it gave me.
