I've bought a 25 hp two stroke mariner on ebay for £560

For m Avon 4m it was perfect.

I went to collect this engine advertised as a running engine with a manual tily which could only be activeted by reaching down and manually releasing the tilt bar as the remote activator had been modifeid by the RNLI and since seized...

Wen I got there the transom fixing screws had seized. I did not pay

2 weeks later I went back. The screws had been drilled out and a stainless substitune jerry rigged in place. The plus side I am told is then the engine is fully serviced.

Today for the first time I put it on the dinghy.

I can not make it tilt at all. Is is possible for the engine to have seized at the tilt bar? Even if I completey remove the locking pin which sets the trim level there is no movement...

Also, running with flsh muffs, a huge amount of oil comes from the bottom and some of it appears to come from the seal behind the prop.....

Now I like the guy who sold it to me and I don't think there was even a hint of trying to pull a fast one..and it was advertised as an old engine...

So two questions...

1) any hints to get the tilt working

2) if advertised like this would you feel agrieved than the tilt could not be made to work in any format at all...

Take it back as not fit for purpose, sounds like the prop seal has gone, if the pivot bearings are seized, lots of heating and bashing and swearing, is it worth it?

Without seeing it then it is difficult to say but Also the RNLI put in their own tilt activating method this will need to be serviced and a new cable installed (without this cable the engine is perminantly locked in the down - drive - position and cannot be tilted.) is a clue to it's unique tilt action.

Seller looks good and genuine so raise the issues with him and hopefully satisfactory outcome - swop engine for another? Don't leave a neg until all avenues explored. eg raising a case. - no you can't raise a case; you're out of time

If totally unhappy then, assuming you paid by paypal, you can instigate a return of your payment.

I think I would be into some negotiation here rather than giving up on the engine. There is probably some money to be spent getting it right and perhaps a quote to do so would be a useful tool in those negotiations (even if you end up doing the work yourself). Good luck.

That is interenting.

I did not have it in gear so maybe that is the problem.

I do want to be completely clear, I like this vendor and I do not for an instant think that he has behaved in any way improperly.

Actually, I'm inclined to get a set of gear seals for the lower gear box and sort it myself. It is a good engine and it fits...

Are you sure it is leaking gear oil. Two strokes often "leak" a fair bit of unburnt oil from the fuel.

If it's light coloured, viscous and stinks like rotting cabbages it's gear oil and it needs some new seals.

If it dark not so viscous and smalls burnt its part burnt two stroke oil and normal. SEE Oil leaking around lower unit
