Yes it makes the cockpit cooler in direct sunlight - also when moored stern too offers privacy without making the cockpit enclosed.

I actually have side panels as well which offer good mozzie defence in the twilight/evening but we don't use them that much. The rear panel stayed on most of the summer as it is split to allow access to the passerelle
