Two fishing boats in rough seas N.Z

Greymouth, South Island. West facing into the Roaring Forties, it's like that more often than not on the full ebb! To the local fishing boats it's just routine. Plus there's a couple of really good spots out on the pier heads for getting photos.

Not the time to get a blockage in your fuel line!

I speak to commercial fishing skippers and most of them have deep respect for the sea but there's some real cowboys here. The other day there was a 6 meter swell running and a lobster boat ( probably around 60ft) was trying to get out to sea through the breakers. I saw him go and ten seconds later he did a 180 and came back. He waited about 3 minutes and then opened up the throttle of his 1000HP motor and headed out. As he did so he hit an enormous roller and I am sure I saw daylight under his vessel.

Figuera Da Foz when storm bound you can watch braver and more powerful commercials running the entrance.. A coaster nearly sideswiped ( with impressive recovery to get back on the leading line) and fishing vessels doing exactly that, slowly slowly , watchee, then full oomph and literally standing on their tails and propellor thrust as they mount ' the big one' on the way out..
Not all bad though , I have sailed in there twice !
