if you bought a slightly smaller you could afford to do the works.. check out this Invicta.. without breaking the bank! Invicta's seem to be a good deal and also Tyler mouldings like the Twister/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

The Invicta looks gorgeous, very similar to a Contessa 26, but I promised myself something bigger. I'm really looking for a boat that'll comfortably(!) take 4 for some longer passages and I've got it my head for some reason that it needs to be 30 foot +. Maybe I should wait a bit, do some more chartering and try to get the dosh together for a Rival/Nich 32 or suchlike. But then I might be going out on a Vancouver 28 soon, maybe that'll change my mind about size.

Oh in that case take a look at the Van de Stadt's Legend 34 not to be confused with the US Legends

If you are want a good deal on a Van De Stadt the place to look is the Netherlands where I believe they are substantially cheaper than here

It all depends on what you mean by comfort. The Invicta was the first boat I looked at, very pretty, (I nearly bought her) but a mite cramped. I've sailed 4-up in my Elizabethan 29 many times and it's ok as long as you're not the one sitting to leeward in the cockpit. As skipper (thus navigator and chief helmsman) I rarely have any trouble. Very few cruising boats allow 4 people to sit to windward in the cockpit though, and some are pushed to allow four people to sit in the cockpit under sail at all. I think that has more bearing on how many you can take on a long passage than the accomodation size. This type of design will always sail well-heeled in anything above 12 knots of wind. The Liz 29 has no more accomodation than the Invicta but a slightly bigger cockpit and more storage space, I'd guess the Invicta has about the same LWL (20'). and beam (7'6") as me. I can't speak for the Contessa, but I'd expect the 26 to be about 6" beamier with similar LWL and cockpit size.

That's a really good point. So far I've only been thinking of size in terms of stowage and whether there's enough room below to run watches without sitting on the off watch while I do the chart work. I hadn't really thought of where everyone else will sit when we all want to be in the cockpit. Cockpit size is going to be important if I'm going to convince my wife and children that sailing is the only way to spend all of our time and money.

On the money front, re: interest free, open-ended, non-repayable loans to teenagers. When my daughter recently asked to borrow some (more) money I asked her when she was going to pay me back, she said, 'well maybe borrow wasn't the right word'. I was so impressed with her honesty that I gave her the money. Has anyone tried this approach to raise funds for a boat?

There are 3 Trintella 29 on the market at the moment, that I have noticed. Traditional keel, but with the Van de Stat magic, Full headroom, a little beamier than Twister, perhaps a little faster, prettier and a robust build by Tyler, fitted out by "Offshore" ? Some home builds also. 14 - 17 k.
Good luck.
