Hi on changing the ball joint on one rudder, The angle between one rudder blade and the other appears different, should both blades be aligned with the keel or offset to the keel. Thanks, The boat is a etap 21i
I would have thought they should be inline. They are on my Jeanneau Lift keel.
I permanently worry that they aren't aligned as I am a bit faster on one tack than the other.
I have checked the measurement roughly, and they look OK.
The correct geometry is when the rudders are aligned perfectly fore and aft parallel to one another with the wheel central. On a cat, and to a lesser extent any boat with twin rudders, the linkage ideally should allow for the rudder on the outside of the turn to turn slightly less than that on the inside. This is achieved sometimes by having tiller arms that are biased outwards, but many boatbuilders don't bother. Just ensure that they are adjusted to be parallel when central, usually achieved by an adjustment in the tie rod length. It could be that fitting a new ball joint you have lost the adjustment.
You wont go faster on one tack than the other because your rudders aren't aligned, the bias will be the same on either tack. If you go faster on one tack than t'other its probably a rigging tuning job. Assuming you don't have all your booze stowed on one side of course!
I once visited a guys yacht who complained of the same thing. SWMBO was about 18 stone and always sat on the same side whatever the tack.... I decided not to point it out though, discretion being the best part of valour etc etc....
